Happiness Is The Road
There were no ladies in the mens amenities this morning so my shower passed without incident. Jay, however, had to contend with the usual snorting, ******* and make up slapping! After brekky we hit the road down to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. We just hoped to goodness that it was going to be nothing like Canberra. The road there clung to the side of a valley and was full of the usual twists and turns and the now usual aggressive toss pieces. After a good few hair pins the road eventually straightened out and led us onto the motorway. We did some food shopping at a New World in the suburb of Lower Hutt about twelve kilometres outside the city centre and then we went to find the camp site which was nearby. There didn't appear to be any good camp sites in Wellington and we had therefore chosen what we hoped was the best of a bad bunch. It was bad and we dread to think what the others must have been like. They were very friendly on reception but the site itself was like a big sink estate for tents and camper vans spread over a vast and tatty area. It reminded us a little bit of the terrible sink estate camp site that we had stayed on in Canberra. It was quiet though, for now anyhow, and we listened to the birds and watched the ducks waddling past and bathing in the big puddle near our van which doubled as their pond. We chilled out and got our laundry done. We haven't washed anything since leaving Australia weeks ago and our dirty bag was trying to crawl out of the van! The weather was cool and overcast and there was a mist which kept crawling in and shrouding the surrounding hills. Wellington was acting all mysterious. We are going into the city centre tomorrow but haven't got high hopes. The only good thing about Wellington appears to be the fact that it contains the ferry port that will get us off the North Island. The camp site filled up later on and the relaxing sound of the birds and ducks was replaced by a load of inconsiderates. We attempted to go to sleep whilst the people in the ****** van next to us played the sliding door Hokey Cokey!
