Happiness Is The Road
It had been a very wet and wild night with torrential showers lashing the camper van. It was still raining when we awoke and opened door number 7 on our advent calendar. Behind it was a cute doggy wearing a christmas hat. After brekky we hit the road with a spooky mist clinging to the hills and we left Jacksons with the spirits of the valley watching us. We headed west and towards the coast driving through many rain showers. Once at the coast we headed south as we were returning to Franz Josef. We had decided to do this because we had liked it at Franz Josef and also because we wanted to buy some more nice things from a wonderful shop we had been in last time we were there. We stopped off at Hokitika on the way and had a mooch around the shops there before continuing our journey south. About an hour and a half later we were arriving back in Franz Josef and checked in at The Rainforest Retreat. We even managed to get the same spot as last time. It felt really good to be back here. The only drawback was that the place was still infested with a hellish amount of sandflies. We were going to walk to the wonderful shop but soon after we got there a big thunder and lightning storm started. The rain that followed was incredibly fierce and intense with huge raindrops bouncing relentlessly on our little metal roof. We holed up and hoped that the rain would stop later on but it didn't and continued for the rest of the day. We went to bed with the rain still intensely lashing us. To make matters worse the back doors of the camper van behind our bed sprung a leak which we had to stuff with paper towels! It held until about 2am when I was rudely awaken by a sodden chunk of paper towel that dropped with a squish onto the side of my face!
