After not much sleep due to some very itchy mosquito bites and my incessant mind I was up early and researching my upcoming trip to Brazil. To say I am a little excited is a huge understatement and finally getting to research things in Brazil is great fun. Around mid-morning the sun was shining again so Ana and I went down to La Rambla again and this time walked in the opposite direction along the coast. As today is an official holiday there were much more people about, walking and enjoying the beach - creating a really nice atmosphere. Ana is really knowledgable on Montevideo and taught me a lot of interesting facts about the the city and the particular area we were walking through. I had promised to do some yoga so when we returned to the house I took Ana through one of my typical yoga sessions. I then cooked lunch for us which was Australian tortillas and an Asian style soy mince stir-fry of which Ana was very impressed. It was now around 3:30 in the afternoon so Ana went for a few hour nap whilst I surfed the Internet and sent out a few emails and Easter greetings. I then made some Mate to wake myself up as tonight was going to be a long night. I packed the last of my things and then at 8pm Ana and I headed to the supermarket to meet Ricardo and the rest of Ana's work colleagues to buy the bits and pieces for tonight's Asado. The whole process of meeting your friends at the supermarket, discussing what to buy, sharing costs and just spending extra time with your friends is a bit of a foreign concept back at home and something I really appreciate in these Spanish countries. Ricardo was really kind in explaining the cuts of meat and what we would be cooking tonight. We brought corn on the cob, capsicums, cheese, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chorizo, and a huge slab of beef along with baguettes, soft drinks and tinned fruit for cocktails. After we had finished with shopping we headed to Ricardo's house and met the rest of the crew which were all there to celebrate Ricardo and his wife moving out of their apartment. We prepared the parilla (BBQ using steam) by burning wood in a rack and waiting for the hot coals to drop and then using these to steam a rack where the meat and vegetables were placed. The parilla was in a small courtyard out the back of Ricardo's apartment and we were all blanketed in smoke the whole evening. The whole process was very slow and after 3 hours the meat and vegetables had just started to cook. It was 11 and we were all starving hungry so we drank loads of soda and I sampled the tasty fruit cocktails. By the time the Chorizo was ready at around midnight I was so hungry I stuffed piece after piece in and made myself feel sick. Next came the corn on the cob which had been coated in mustard and a little oil and then wrapped in Alfoil - it was absolutely delicious and I ate and ate. Next came the capsicum but unfortunately it was not cooked so along with the chunks of beef it was thrown in the oven to give it a speed-up. It was soon 12:30am and time to make my way to the bus station so Ricardo cut up some of the beef for me to try and god am I grateful he did - without a doubt the most delicious piece of Asado meat I have ever eaten. With that I thanked my new Uruguayan friends, bid them farewell and headed to the bus station which was just 5 minutes down the road in Ana's car. After thanking Ana I made my way into the bus terminal and boarded the bus and with my earphones in was able to fall asleep reasonably quickly for the next 2 hours.
