What to Do?? Today I had to figure out what the hell I am going to do as I don't have a host in my next country and city. First thing I did was organize to stay the weekend here in Suriname which will give me the chance to find a host in Georgetown. Luckily Elly a local girl I had been in contact with answered my message and confirmed I could still stay with her over the weekend. CJ had gone to work early and wasn't coming back until 3pm so I had to figure a way to get out of building; hoping someone leaving could let me out around the middle of the day. I ended up waiting over 30 minutes and asking the cleaning lady to find someone who could let me out, which in the end was the caretaker. I headed straight for the central market again to see my friend and see if he was serving iguana (tree chicken) today. On arrival at the market I found out there was no iguana again today but the guy promised he would call his friend and see when he would have iguana available again. Today I had time to slowly wonder around the market and ask the sellers about different things. I was very intrigued by the Indian herbs, spices, sauces and foods; from fried potatoes, noodles, garlic to peanut pastes, spices and shrimp pastes. The women working the stalls were lovely and explained what things were and how to cook with them. I ended up with some spicy peanut paste that when mixed with water becomes a sause and this savory snack thing which is like a deep fried pancake with peanuts inbedded within it. I wondered around some more; visiting various Chinese and Indian supermarkets and looking at all the strange things they stocked. It was hard to find a place to sit and have lunch and every time I did locals would come up and hassle me and try and sell me drugs etc. It became very annoying in the end and when I finally did find a place to sit; half way through my lunch these two swifty looking guys came up and hovered around me and I could tell they were thinking to rob me. At 3pm I had to go back and meet CJ as this was the only way into his apartment. We hung-out a while before I headed back into the city to meet another local Couchsurfer by the name of Valery.
I met the lovely Valery at a bar in downtown and after a drink and a bit of a chat she took me for a walk around the city. Valery is a very interesting lady having just spent the last 11 years in Holland and now returned to her Homeland. We shared some very interesting conversations and she was able to give me a better understanding of the culture and lifestyle here in Suriname. We walked along the waterfront and visited the old fort which at night with all the lights was absolutely breathtaking. Around 8pm I had to head back to the apartment so I thanked Valery and then walked back to CJs. CJ had prepared a spicey vegetable stir-fry with Chinese Pork, sausages and egg for dinner that was incredibly tastey and reminded me of of all the amazing food I ate in South-east Asia. I really do miss Asia not just the food, the smells, the colors but mainly because of the people.
