Today we were off to a small town just outside of Osorno (called Lake Ranco) where Karina's sister lives and works for the summer; at a discoteca as a chef. The town is very famous as both the current and past presidents have their holiday homes on the lake and the real estate is some of the most expensive in the country. We had planned to go early but we both slept in and after a late breakfast it was nearly 11am when we left. Karina has a little Market Garden where she leases a small piece of garden where she grows vegetables, so before leaving Puerto Montt we stopped and dropped off some vegetable scraps for her compost pile. The drive out was supposed to be an hour but was actually 3 hours (Chileans are terrible at judging time and to them 1 hour is the same as 3 hours), there was some roadwork going on which was incredibly slow and one stop lasted over 20 minutes. Anyways we arrived to the Lake at 2pm and what an incredibly scenic image we were presented with, a huge dark blue lake, surrounded by mountains of greens and snow, the water was at a glass-off and there was not a gust of wind. We arrived at Karina's sisters house and were met by her sister, sisters friend and her sisters 10 year old son. The friends parents own the disco that is infront of the house and as both girls are chefs they run the restaurant (only open in Summer months January/February). The son was crazy hyperactive and wanted me to play baseball, soccer, then skateboard and then he had me running around the property seeing the pigs, cows, turkeys, feeding the animals and picking the fruit. They had loads of cherries growing and so were making very tasty cherry confit when we arrived. They took us for a tour of the disco which was very cool; 2 floors, restaurant, bars and would open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights only (very strange but all the nightclubs here serve food). After our tour it was time for lunch; a very tasty chicken and vegetables dish with a very tasty family grown avocado (Karina's grandmothers 100 year old tree). After lunch we tried the cherry confit which was delicious but a bit to sugary for me. We then all jumped in the sisters 4wd and headed into town; the first stop was up the mountain to the best viewpoint of the lake. The mirador was incredible and at about 1000m gave an incredible panoramic of the area. There was a small walking trail that lead to a few more miradors so we continued walking stopping for various different views of the lake. We met this Chilean guy who also ended up being a chef in training and amazingly the girls offered him a job at the disco as he was here for the summer and not doing anything. The next stop was the beach (they refer to beach hear as the shore of the lake) where there were lots of kids swimming and families picnicking at the waterfront. A quick stop for ice cream and we were back at the sisters house saying our goodbyes as we had to leave by 6pm to make my 10pm bus. We were given a few big jars of cherry confit and were sent on our way, the journey back was much nicer and as Karina and I get on so well we talked the whole way back. Arriving back at Karina's I had enough time to shower, eat dinner and organise my things before she took me to the bus station. There was quite a bit of traffic and we only just made it on time before bus departed. I thanked Karina and gave her some Belgium chocolates and some souvenirs I had brought for her in Valparaiso before saying goodbye for now (I will be back in 1-3 weeks and will stay with Karina again). Boarding the bus I discovered I was downstairs in VIP class with a full cama seat - Thankyou Chilean Ministry of Education.
