After a five hour train ride from rome to bari, an eight hour ferry ride with nowhere to sleep on but the concrete floor from bari to iguemensita, and then another hour and a half feri from iguemensita to corfu, we have arrived on the greek island of corfu. we are staying at kind of a famous hostel called the pink palace. so we check in at about 830 in the mourning, on no sleep, and the girl at the reception desk greets us with a shot of ouzo. it wasnt as bad as i expected, but i would have preffered a bowl of frosted flakes instead. after check-in we went to our room and slept until about 530, so i have only been awake for about a half hour now. but corfu sleeps beautiful. our hostel is right on the ocean, and right next to the mountains on the west coast of the island. they have all sorts of extreme activites you can do here. mike and i are going on an atv 4-wheeler safari tour for six hours tomorrow. they also have cliffdiving and a whole bunch of other extreme stuff. not to mention a pool, jacuzzi, and basketball volleyball court. i think mike is most excited for the complimentary three course greek dinner, and the toga party on saturday night.
im gonna go explore the grounds, check out the beach, and learn how to say "can i have a beer" in greek.
our three days in corfu have been amazing. our first full day we rented atv's and went out exploring with a few kids we had met the night before at the hostel bar. we were going to go on the safari tour that the hostel offered, but then we thought it might be kind of weak, so we just went out on our own. it was probably the coolest thing we have done since we have been on this trip. the island is full of mountains and beautiful beaches, and there are all these old tiny towns that look like they are from the 1700's. and the roads on the island are so small and windy its almost like they are made for atv's. the island is also pretty big, which we found out when we got lost trying to find our way back to the hostel. one of these girls we were with told us to head back to a town called sanardi, because it was the town next to agrios gordos which is where our hostel was. sanardi is not the town next to ours, sinardis is. and sanardi is not even close to agrios gordos. once we figured out that this girl lead us in the complete wrong direction, she looks over to us and says "my bad". mike and i were just like, no s*** its ur bad. but eventually we found our way back to the hostel, two hours later than we were supposed to get in.
yesterday mike and i went out by ourselves on the atvs, and explored the southern tip of the island. there wasnt as much in the south, but there was some good offroading and some amazing views. the only real problem we had yesterday was when we got to this cliff to do some sightseeing, and the parking break on my atv gave out. mike had gone back to the atvs to get his water so thats how we noticed. i was kind of far away and i heard mike yelling, so i grabed a few rocks because i thought somebody was trying to rob us orsomething from the way mike yelled my name. turns out it just rolled into this car. but there was nobody around and the car didnt have any noticeable damage, so we got the hell out of there.
as great as our days in corfu have been, today is almost equally awful. we had to check out of our hostel at 10 am, hungover from last nights toga party, and have to waste like 8 hours in corfu town until our bus leaves for athens. and this bus, which costs 40 euros, gets in to athens at 3 am. we arent getting a hostel for tonight, so the rest of this day and night are going to be terrible. i dont see a possibility for any other outcome besides misery. these travel days just suck and are the days when u want to go home. but i am optimistic about athens, and the gyro im about to eat for lunch. yamas
