Hi everyone,
We are in humid Singapore, where we are sweating more than usual, I have already changed my pants 3 times today, I know that was too much information so I am sorry, but it is humid. However it could be worse, I could be in a country that is freezing wearing huge winter coats, with dark mornings and nights, how depressing would that be!!!
Since the last blog we have been to Shanghai and had an eventful time of much travelling with many modes of transportation within a small time frame. Shanghai started out as a bit of pain in the bum, I booked a Holiday Inn hotel that was alot cheaper than any of the hostels we have stayed so far, and by far the most luxury thing we have stayed in so far on our trip. I booked it thinking it was close to the centre, well it was more like 15km from the centre of Shanghai, but the train fares to Shanghai were only around 20p....return, so it wasn't so bad and as I said the room was excellent.
Shanghai was great, we felt after seeing Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai we saw 3 different stages of China's growth. Shanghai has sky scrappers everywhere, and everywhere you go you see them building a load more, it will look so different in 5 years. After Shanghai we flew down to Gaunzhou, which is just East of Hong Kong on the mainland, again another huge city in the throws of redevelopment. However all the money China are ploughing in to the development of these major cities, they really do seem to miss and forget about the less fortunate.
We had to get an hour coach from the airport to the city centre where we carried our rucksacs to the train station for a connecting train to Hong Kong. We were both dreading the train station, as our experiences of them aren't great as they are usual packed full of people with all there worldly possesions in a sheet folded up over their backs, staring at you......But as it turns out the station was really quiet and the trains to Hong Kong were modern and great. To continue to bore you once at hong kong we managed to fill out a police report for the things that we lost so we could make a claim, then we got a bus to the airport, where we settled down for another romantic night in another airport.
We went to bed and the airport was quiet, apart for the voice over on the esculator telling people to mind there step , every 2 minutes. We wouldn't mind but there were no bloody people on the thing. We woke up to a busy airport and everyone looking at us like we were aliens, especially 3 middle aged chinese women who looked at us with shock, I can only describe them as the 3 monkeys see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.
We arrived at Singapore and head straight out to get our night train tickets to Kuala Lumpur, walking up to the counter all smug as we had done our research. We knew we wanted to get the night train and we thought it would cost us 12 pounds each. Then a spanner was thrown in to the works well and truly, it was going to cost 130 pounds for the both of us. So we set about looking at other ways of transport, that was cheap. A donkey was an option, but it took to long, the bus was another, but it left to early , then we oppted for a flight, which turned out to be 50 quid for the both of us, a result! This also means we get another full day in Singapore.
We have enjoyed singapore so far, its modern and very clean and the people are friendly. We went for a full works curry in little India last night and we walked what felt like most of the city today seeing the sights an going toa cook your own food restaurant, which was great. So tomorrow we are meeting our friend who has our malaria tablets and south east asia book kindly sent to us by the Pullin parentals.
Then we are off on a night flight to KL, spending yet another night in the airport before we head to Cambodia. And we can't wait.
Hope you enjoyed this update, until next time
LOVE YOU PEOPLE
