Why would ya??
London, UK
So, a few years back I quit my job and traveled Europe for a couple of months. I made a few amateur backpacker errors/mishaps along the way with money, accomodation and transport etc. However, this didn't put me off and I caught the travel bug big time. Ever since then I've struggled to settle and I've wanted to quit my job and go on a bigger trip to somewhere a little further away from home for a prolonged period of time. So after a few weeks in Malaysia and Singapore two years ago I decided that Asia was my destination. This was where I wanted to start my 'Big trip'. I fell in love with Malaysia, the people, the food, the culture, the beaches... EVERYTHING!!! And it got me thinking how great the rest of SE Asia must be.
So... most people who know me will know that I'm partial to a few beers/ ciders/ Vodkas/ Zambucas and that when there's a good night to be had I'm easily led no matter how much I tell myself I don't want to do it! With this in mind I've decided my first stop will be Borneo! Yep, Probably not the place you think I'd start after that description. Well, here's why?
Borneo has been near the top of my dream destinations list for as long as I can remember. So on this trip I must visit Borneo. However, I know that once I land in the backpacker haven that is SE Asia with all them bars in Bangkok, or on Koh Phangan with all them beach parties, I'll be easily persuaded by the people I meet to move on to the next Island, the next city, the next PARTY!!! And then when my money runs short I'll think s***, I didn't make it to Borneo!
I don't want any regrets from this trip and I certainly don't want to make the whole trip all about getting sloshed every day and not remembering anything. I want to experience cultures. I want the adrenaline rushes. I want to achieve things I've never done before like climbing a mountain. I want to trek jungles, learn to scuba dive, swim in clear blue seas and under waterfalls. I want to bungee jump and Skydive. I want to eat unusual food. I want to meet new people and make new friends. I want to chill out, clear my mind and enjoy the fact I am no longer living groundhog day. and I want stories I can bore the pants off my friends and family with. I WANT Life long memories!!! (Although my memory is pants so I better take loads of photos!!!)
So on February 26th 2013 I will say goodbye to London and get on a one way flight to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Borneo where my journey begins.....
