Las Vegas
13th - 17th November
After spending a day or so chilling in Nadi (finally having a shower and doing washing etc!) we flew straight from the ‘simple life’ to the bright lights of Vegas! It was quite a shock to the system especially as we were checking into a huge classy hotel called The Mirage, which had a tropical island theme, and we had just come from a real tropical island (quite different we can assure you!). You are probably wondering where the extravagance came from after the months of ‘roughing it’, well we had Phil’s lovely parents come to spoil us! :-)
Vegas is a unique place that everyone should experience if they can. It has the incredible effect of disgusting you yet amazing you all at the same time - especially when you have just come from a tiny island in the Pacific where you savour every drop of water to a place in the middle of the desert where energy is pouring out of the place like it’s endless! The huge hotels on ‘the strip’ are the main attraction, outshining any sleazy gambling, which we unexpectedly avoided. The most impressive is definitely The Bellagio, from Ocean’s Eleven, with it’s classy dancing fountains.
We found plenty to entertain ourselves away from the roulette tables including riding several rollercoasters. The most extreme rides being at the top of the Stratosphere (an extremely tall skyscraper), where you were dangled and spun over the edge of the tower!
We also found time to visit the nearby Grand Canyon in style - by limo and helicopter with a champagne meal at the base - well worth the trip! Before leaving Vegas we saw a new Cirque de Soleil show based on The Beatles, called Love. For those of you who haven’t heard of it, Cirque de Soleil is an extremely artistic acrobatics/dance extravaganza which you can’t take your eyes off due to all the detail and activity on the stage.
