Cat & Ame's Discovery Tour
Hi everyone!
Thanks for your emails, you know who you are :)
Well it's been more than a week and so much more has happened.
We have visited Chichicastenango Market, which was beautiful, with amazing fabrics of all colours and shades.
Bought some too!
Then on sunday evening we drove to Antigua, which used to be Central America's capital and is now Unesco World Heritage site. Absolutely beautiful town, with cobbled streets and thousands of colourful facades. Gorgeous.
On Monday we hiked up Volcan Pakaya, the only active volcano near Antigua. We stood impressively close to the lava, and walking on hollow rock that sounded more like hollow meringue was quite intereting...
We also used the chance of a free afternoon to go and have a massage, after all the hiking!
Tuesday we visited some local villages, and also a macadamia plantation and a coffee plantation, Guatemala being the 7th main producer and the 3rd in terms of quality, around the world.
We had a couple of car accidents, but nothing major, i think here it's the norm for everyone to smash each other in now and then...considering what i've seen of Guatemalan driving so far. Also we were stuck in a massive traffic jam, which we later found out was due to this road being blocked up cos two people had been shot there....ummm...
Finally, one of our bus drivers in a tour had a gun, as the area of Volcan Pacaya is renownedly visited by bandits who hold tourits up!
On wednesday we made our way up north to Flores, which is a small town on an island in the middle of lake Peten Itza.
Along the way we stopped in a restaurant in the middle of the jungle where Macaos were freely populating the trees.
From Flores we have visited the ruins of Tikal, which is the most impressive of all sites so far. Absolutely beautiful, in the middle of the jungle. There we saw toucans and another weird animal similar to an ant-eater.
We climbed some of the temples, and enjoyed a fab view of the temple tops sprouting out amidst the trees.
Finally on friday we made our way through the border to Belize, San Ignacio. Here the weatehr is positively tropical again, and the mosquitos are having the time of their life. On me they are anyway...
We spent a couple of days tubing down rivers, swimming in jungle natural pools, and caving. During the caving, which involved some climbing and some coasteering with our head lights on, we explored these caves where Mayan priests used to go for ceremonies, and saw remains of pottery, as well as some human sacrifices! Spooky...
Yesterday we made our way to Caye Caulker, off the coast of Belize, which is one of the islands in the middle of the barrier reef, and even from the ground, the view isn't much different to the picture above.
All blue, and white sand.
Had a party on the beach last night, and i have finally been for my first proper dive outing today.
2 beatiful dives, saw sting rays, sharks, a ship wreck, lots of corals and even 2 turtles. So beatiful...
Lots of gossip but will leave that for later!
Right, got to go, but love you all and will be in touch soon!
Lots of love,
C & A xxxx
