Even if you only have a week, go to Mozambique! It was fantastic and i loved every minute of it - didn't want to leave, especially as all the guys i was travelling with are still there.
We left very early on Friday morning to Tofo. In typical african style we turned up at Fatimes to catch the 5.30 bus (after confirming the night before) only to be told there was no bus and we'd have to catch the public transport! So off we trotted there and got bundled on with all the others. It delayed us by about 2hours, but this seemed even longer as most of them had been out the night before.
We arrived in Tofo that afternoon after the worlds hottest bus ride and after dumping our stuff in the dorm we all headed to the sea. The guys i had come with were: Ben and Adam - Aussies, Bryan - American, Miguel - Spanish and Netto - Mozambiquan! For dinner we went into town to a tiny 'restaurant' we'd had recommended to us. Proper locals joint but it was a big feed for next to nothing which we all appreciated. That night we went to see whats going on in Tofo and just watched up and down the beach checking out wheres good - a recon for tomorrow night.
Saturday our only plan was to travel to the cashpoint as Adam and Bryan lost there bank cards (don't ask!) and so the bank of Julia was in operation. They ran up big tabs as when we got there only certain cards seemed to be working so Bryan headed into Inhambane to find a cashpoint there. I spent the day on the beach and in the sea...hard life eh? That night Ben arrived (i forget to say we left him behind in maputo, thats another story) so after our recon mission yesterday we knew where to head out. In town we'd also made friends with a local 'bar' owner so we made like the locals and started off there.
Sunday Bryan and I had booked on to the ocean safari - well we all had but the Aussies didnt make it... - where yo get the chance to swim with whale sharks and dolphins. Unfortunately we only saw a few dolphins on the horizon and a humpback whale in the distance but they were cool and let us book on for a reduced rate the next day. It was still a cool boat ride though, although breaching the boat on to the beach was seriously painful. Imagine driving a speedboat into the beach at full pelt - exactly! Sunday we thought was a full moon but as we were in africa they decided to put a full moon party on the next night, as you do...
Monday we once more went on the ocean safari - and one more the Aussies didn't make it, crazy guys! This time we did get lucky and found a really chilled out whale shark about 6m long. Ended up swimming with it for around 45mins and it was fantastic. Also saw dolphins really close to the boat which was great. That night was the supposed full moon party but in typical african style it was just another normal night! I'm not complaining though as Tofo is seriously fun :)
I had a bus to catch at 3.45am so sleep didn't even enter the frame, needless to say it was a long bus ride back to Maputo. I got there aorund midday and just chilled at the backpackers, got changed and packed all my stuff. Then i headed to the airport to catch my flight back to Joburg. Now i'm once more facing a long night here (about 15hours now) until my flight goes to Livingstone at 9am tomorrow. Talking of there i changed up some money and now am pretty much a millionare in zambian kwacha as the exchange rate is 1pound to 7500kwacha...!
I will write again from Livingstone as i've got a few days there before my tour leaves early Monday morning :)
