My turn to update (Mark)! Yesterday i completed and thankfully survived the downhill mountain bike ride aptly named death road . Approx 40miles reaching speeds up to 45 mph of adrenaline fuelled cliff edge riding from a height of 4000metres above sea level.
27 tourists have never made it back from this ride but i can say wearing my smug face right now that i came 3rd out of 40 particapants beaten by two Germans only !
Day 24 - Early rise for a jungle trip as we headed for La paz airport to board a small aircraft to fly over the Andes to embark on our jungle trip at Rurrenbaque .Once we arrived we endured a 3 hour dusty jeep trip armed with our two tour guides and personal cook to the boat port where the fun began as our two boats of 5 headed down river . We were so fortunate to see large black caimen alligators , turtles , kopaburas ( like a huge beaver) and numerous birds including eagles , herons , cormarants , vultures and kingfishers .
After 3 hours of nature spotting we arrived at our jungle lodge where we settled in before heading to the sunset bar for a well deserved beer and to watch the sunset before heading back late in the night surrounded by alligator eyes as the boat headed back down stream in darkness.
Day 25 - Still jungle bound , we were woken by howler monkeys at 7am. After a hearty bolivian breakfast we walked towards swamp land in search for anacondas! This was in 30degree heat wearing welly boats and long trousers but thankfully it was all worth it after finding a 2metre anaconda more than happy to be handled by ten sweaty tourists.
The afternoon consisted of finding pink dolphins , they proved more elusive but we did manage a glimpse as they darted past the boat .
The evening once again set the perfect scene for further beers to the jungle backdrop from the susnset bar balcony .
Day 26 - Woken early with the image of a large rat fresh in my mind following a trip to the loo in the night , we headed to breakfast before a morning on the boat piranha fishing . Julia caught a yellow tailed piranha with 22 razor sharp teeth which Julia took great delight in comapring it to my one sardine that i caught , in my defence it was the biggest sardine on the planet im sure!
After fishing we headed back down river as our jungle trip was coming to an end , although not without its dramas. We broke down and Julia was within half a metre ofa large alligator , naturally i protected her by running to the other end of the boat! Prepared with one oar only as the back up to our motor and an hour or so from port we floated until rescue arrived and we were towed to safety .
Once back in the town of Rurrenbaque we headed for the mosquito bar for a few relaxing cocktails .
Day 27 -We packed up ready to fly back to main land La paz , as soon as we arrived at breakfast we we greeted with 3 members of our tour group vomiting which has now lead to 5 not an ideal state of health to be in when you are about to board a plane ! One girl from the tour was so ill she could not get off the plane and after oxygen , a wheelchair and an ambulance she endured a lovely 3night stay in a bolivian hospital (at least there was cable tv ) . We have found out since that the illness was caused by a parasite most likely from water . Thankfully the stomachs of steel owned by me and Julia has fended off such terrors!
Day 28-The healthy remaining four of us set upon an organised city tour of La paz with an English speaking guide , visting plazas , colonial streets , panoramic viewpoints of this city which is situated in a volcanic crater and finsishing in a fascinating but rather strange witches market which included the sale of Llama foetuses, which bolivians traditionally purchase and bury under the house for good luck , not sure this will catch on in the UK.
For the Afternoon we attended Choalita wrestling ,which is bolivian men and also woman amateur wrestling but still in the traditional dress. Absolutely hilarious if not slightly terrifying when the woman wrestlers jumped into the crowd of watching tourists and attacked us with our own popcorn and drinks!
We completed the day with a mexican meal and drinks at oliver travels with the guys from our tour who could attend , this was to be our last time together as our Kumuka tour has come to an end now and we will begin our next chapter of travels alone.
Our next update will be from Peru .
Will be in touch soon , happing reading .
Love Mark and Julia xxx
