Well ladies and gentleman, I have spent another week in yet another state capital. This time it was Jefferson City, MO. No let me just start this with...although Jefferson City has its own airport, it is not the one that we flew in and out of. We flew into the Columbia airport... if you can even call it that... one building...a landing strip...one gate... and the only place you can fly to and from is Memphis 3-4 times a day. There you have it. I do believe it is the smallest airport I've been to thus far.
We stayed at the Truman Hotel, which is the first hotel that was actually kinda awful. The customer service was pretty much non-existent (they took my dirty towels but didn't give me any clean ones. When I called the front desk to get some they said, "oh we have some up here, come and get some whenever you want"... not that I need to be waited on or anything, but just the manner in which is was handled and said was a little ridiculous.) the rooms could have been nice, but were dusty and dingy, and who knows the last time they really truly got cleaned.
Even though the experience at the hotel was not superb, the rest of our stay was wonderful. Jefferson City welcomed us with open arms. Our show was sponsored by the Capital Theater, which is a local dinner theater there. The Pres. and VP of that company were an absolute pleasure. They even through us a nice little reception at their theater after the show on Friday. We performed at another theater at the Miller Performing Arts Center, which is connected to a high school. It was a nice size theater, and had a lot of potential to be beautiful, it looked as though there were actually some nice carvings and such around the proscenium, but it was all painted gray... and the first thing i thought when i saw the space was wow... this is gray. But that being said, we still had a wonderful time there. The audiences were all very appreciative, though several started quite timid until they realized that it was ok to laugh :)
While there we also got invited for a special lunch by the president of Central Bank. They have a private dinning room at their main location in downtown, with a private cook. It was very fun, very yummy and it was wonderful getting to meet him and some of his coworkers. We even had name tags at our seats. Also, the Governor gave us a proclamation officially welcoming us to Jefferson City.
Speaking of the Governor, we got a tour of his mansion. Beautiful. Absolutely stunning architecture and it was very interesting hearing about some of the history. After the mansion we went and looked at the Capital. Again, beautiful. However, I have to say slowly all the capitals are starting to look the same, from the outside that is. I mean i guess its a given, but accept for the detailing, most capitals appear to built in pretty much the same style. One thing that made this one different from the others I've seen these past few weeks is that this one had a museum on the first floor. I didn't look at too much of it though (and please know, it did look very intresting, but we were on a bit of time crunch), because I was more interested in exploring the stairways and hallways. Ended up finding the house and senate galleries. The house gallery was very modern, and the senate pretty old fashioned and traditional... wonder what that means...
The other great thing about Jefferson City was that I got to see my great friend Alex. She drove all the way form St. Louis to see the show, and even had a rehearsal she had to rush back to that night. Haven't seen her in ages.... it was wonderful to catch up with her. I also ended up seeing her again on Sunday. I drove to St. Louis and just chilled there with her, Jason, 2 of her friends and her dad. it was a wonderful relaxing evening.
So there you have it, that is Jefferson City. It is a beautiful city, with wonderful people, history, and sights. We start performing in Hartford tomorrow, and my stay here has already been wonderful! I'll tell you all about it next time! Till then :)
