On the flight to Singapore Rachel noticed more and more bites on her legs, which we recognised as bed bugs! She had about 50 just on her legs so the first thing we did the next morning was wash all of our clothes and keep them in plastic bags, we should have done our bags too but the washing machine at the hostel was not big enough so hopefully it is enough. We don't think she has had anymore yet. That took up all the morning so in the afternoon we headed to China Town because it was Chinese New Year. There wasn't much going on as the big celebrations had been the night before, but there was lots of shops selling Chinese Souvenirs and little restaurants selling cheap meals! The streets were all decorated with lanterns and there were temples all around. For lunch we found a place where there was alot of food stalls/mini restaurants all under cover, both of us had duck with rice and noodles which cost $4! Awesome!
Just after we had finished it started to chuck it down! We managed to shelter under a building before it stopped! We walked around to the marina to look at the famous Singapore landscape with the boat on top of the 3 sky scrapers (Marina Bay Sands Hotel). After some photo snapping we headed to the malls, only to find that most of the shops were closed because of the Chinese New Year so we went back to the hostel. Our hostel is an average standard but it is quite a good location just outside Little India, so for dinner we decided to go there for a curry. Little India was manic, just how you expect India to be, street venders selling everything and lots of people and cars. There were hundreds of restaurants but we decided on one which was really nice! Our first proper curry in a while, in Australia and New Zealand they don't do spice!
For our second day we went to Raffles Hotel. Singapore's first hotel. It was actually a lot easier to get in than we had heard. Inside there are a lot of boutiques to look around and restaurants. We went to have a look at the long bar where the Singapore Sling cocktail was invented and you can throw peanut shells on the floor, but decided to save the drinking for later when we planned to go up the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. After some lunch we headed back to the Marina front. There was some kind of festival thing happening for Chinese New Year so we looked around that on route to the Hotel. The hotel is massive; it has its own shopping mall, casino, theatre etc… We looked around the mall which was had all the shops, none of which we could afford and made our way up to the lookout point at the front of the boat which is 57 floors up. On the top there is a swimming pool which the guests of the hotel can use which looks awesome but we went to the bar to wait for the sun to set. We ordered a jug of sangria and a couple of beers later which ended up costing us a small fortune but it was cool to lookout over Singapore. The view at night was even more spectacular than in the day. We then walked back around the marina to watch the light show that the hotel puts on every night. It was really cool and we got some great photos! After a long day we got the subway back to the hostel. The subway is so clean, cheap and so easy to get around. It is also air conditioned which means it's great for escaping the heat!
