Our next stop on was 1770. There were 5 other people travelling with us there who were on our Fraser Island trip. We arrived at 7pm and checked in to our hostel; Cool Bananas. We went out and grabbed some fish and chips before catching up on the blog and getting an early night before our next trip; Castaway!
Our briefing for the flight to the island was in the morning. We were told what we needed for the night and informed of our flight time. We were flying at 3pm with another girl called Sam, we also met some others in the group and then did a joint shop for food and alcohol. Whilst waiting for our flight we went to the beach to look around, but it was just a standard Australian beach. We were dropped at the airport and saw the plane we were flying in. It was tiny and looked quite old, but we just told ourselves it had been flying ages with no problems. The pilot was Bruce, who was a good character. First of all he told us that the in-flight movie would be girl's boobs going up and down when he does his tricks. Bruce is famous for his plane tricks. J was in the front of the plane and the girls were at the back. The take-off was ok, but quite bumpy until we gained some height. It was a bit of an understatement to say Rachel was nervous. J could speak to Bruce through the headsets but the girls couldn't hear what was going on, but just knew that they were plotting things. Bruce turned the plane quite sharply side to side and then after some time he went up and down quickly like a rollercoster. It made your stomach jump so much. He always made sure that we were ok though. It was lots of fun and managed to get a funny video of Rachel scared. The flight was probably the highlight of the trip although only lasting about 15 minutes.
When we arrived some of the boys on the first flight had already got some fire wood for the camp fire. We waited for the other group land before Bruce told us how to cook our dinner of Beef Stew. We then headed to the lighthouse on the island and the caves. The only other people living on the island are 2 volunteers who look after the lighthouse. It was 2km from the camp and the only place we could get help in case of an emergency. The caves were about another 1km from there on the other side of the island. We were warned on the walk to be careful where we stepped because of snakes and spiders but were lucky enough not to see anything. The caves were a bit of the let down, more like slits in the rocks and didn't go too deep but it was nice to see the rest of the island. We collected some more fire wood and headed back to camp. Will started dinner and the rest of us got the campfire going. It got really big which was good because it the heat from it helped keep the insects away, and there was a lot of them! We had an awesome night, drinking goon and beers with everyone. It was a really good group. There was Sam, Gary and Will from our Fraser Island trip. Then Ciaran and Tony who were travelling together and Freddie who was travelling on his own during his gap year. It was an awesome night which the photos show. Not all publishable! We all ended up staying up quite late but were also quite anxious about going to bed because of all the things that were in the bushes. We could hear rustling but weren't sure what it was so felt safer on the beach by the fire. In the end though we were all too tired so went back to the tents.
The next day we all woke up early and just had a lazy day recovering from the previous night. J tried to do a bit of fishing from the rocks and managed to catch one fish. The boys also played on the kayaks and inflatable tires in the waves. We were hopeful that we might be able to see dolphins but we weren't lucky enough. When we came to lunch time we were all ready to leave the island, the kitchen was disgusting and not somewhere you would want to cook. But hunger got the better of us and we cooked our burgers. We then sunbathed and waited for our flight back to the mainland. It was Woody who picked us up, he didn't do any messing around like Bruce so the flight was a bit quicker back. It was an fun trip but one night was definitely enough! The camping was far too basic for us!
