Punta Gorda is the most southern town of any notable size in Belize and was to be my weekend home for the next three weeks while I volunteer/dive with Reef CI in the Sapodilla Cayes.
On my first weekend in PG a local bar called The Bamboo Chicken was organising 'The musical event of the year - Punta Rock'. A ticketed event with live acts from such big names as Big G, Chico Remoras and the Kulture Boyz, not to be missed!
It was interesting to say the least. Pretty much the only white guy there I felt a little out of place, but everyone was friendly and I bumped into a local called Janice that I had met in a bar the night before so she looked after me.
The bar which is right on the sea front had built a temporary stage on the jetty and a pretty decent crowd had gathered before the first act came on. Everyone seemed to love the bands and the music and there was even a dance move called the Punta which seems to consist of shaking violently while the girls shake their booty in your crotch. Just like back home really. Even after Janice's best instruction I still couldn't get the hang of it so skulked away to the back to watch from afar. The best way I can describe the music is like someone had pressed the demo button on an old Casio keyboard, turned up the volume so loud that its distorted and shouted over the top with the odd air horn thrown in. Quite an experience.
As I sat down at the back I was joined by an American who was feeling equally out of place. It turned out that he is a Pilot from Alaska called John Ponts and is on the TV show 'Flying Wild Alaska', come to escape the cold I guess!
