After nearly a week in the jungles of Belize and Guatemala it was time to head back to the cost. Until now I had been moving around pretty fast, not stopping in any one place for more than 3 nights. Caye Caulker offered a chance to slow down and relax a bit
After crossing the border back into Belize I stopped another night at Bella's in San Ignacio, basically just because I liked it there. A couple of friendly Canadians offered to cook for me so in return I went out and bought some fresh watermelon and pineapple for dessert.
Arriving at the dock in Belize City a little early for the water taxi I fell asleep in the shade and nearly missed it completely!
For the past year or so I had a photo of a hostel called Yuma's House pinned to my desk at work, the colorful clapperboard building set amongst coconut palms was a welcome distraction and day dream aid. So as you can imagine, I was pretty annoyed when I got an email telling me that they were full for the dates I wanted. Determined, I went anyway in the hope that there had been a cancellation. I was in luck, someone had just pulled out and due to me being last on the boat (because I fell asleep) I was first off so made it to Yuma's before anyone else.
Caye Caulker is a sleepy Caribbean island, who's 'Go Slow' motto is applied to everything from walking to talking. With no cars or proper roads people get around by foot, bike or the odd golf cart taxi. Old fishing rope spread across the road acts as a speed bump to slow down the cyclists! The people of Belize are friendly but nowhere more so than Caye Caulker. One guy selling BBQ food on the beach let me eat for free because he didn't have any change. I became a regular paying customer over the next few days.
Split in two during a hurricane in the 60's all the bars, restaurants and hostels are on the smaller half. The channel of water between the two islands known as The Split is a great place to hangout, sunbath, swim and snorkel and The Lazy Lizard bar is in prime position to blast out reggae tunes and serve cold rum punch and Belikin Beer.
Apart from relaxing, Caye Caulker was also my base to dive the Blue Hole. More on that later.
Later in the week I bumped into Dave, an American that I met at Bella's in San Ignacio and did the ATM tour with me and Matt.
