A sea side surfers town, hot sun, great food and wine and a deck that is half of the size of our apartment have made this four day stop in Biarritz a bit of a haven. We have spent many hours relaxing and people watching...of particular interest to the kids is the French custom of overweight, older women to sit topless on the beach while smoking and looking at their phones.
The best thing about hanging around a town and having an open agenda is that you get time for accidental discoveries ..
On the way across the country we made a pit stop at the Dune de Pyla. After many hours on the road, the kids bickering in the back seat and Mahri throwing up about 20 minutes into the 8 hour drive..... We landed on a camp site that backed directly on to the dune. It was an incredible site to climb 396 steps up a wobbly ladder to get a view of the Gulf de bisycane and the Atlantic Ocean. Definitely a trip highlight for me!
We finished the rest of the drive the next day and have been staying in a great downtown apartment for 4 days.
We've been trying to avoid the lure of visiting too many other nearby European countries and stretching ourselves too thin but the temptation of San Sebastián, Spain only 45 minutes away was too much. My friend Derek (Uncle Dude as he's known to the kids) was so impressed with San Sebastián that he wrote a song about it - that's enough reason to check it out for me. The kids marvelled at the fact that within 45 minutes we could be in a different country and were a bit puzzled why the countryside still looked like France! We managed to walk along the beach , eat tapas in a restaurant and take in a museum portraying the history the city within a 700 yr old Castile.
Today we are expecting more sun and we are going to try more bodysurfing in the cold Atlantic Ocean.
Next we will continue to zig zag our way over to Avignon.
