Australia Zoo!
Taking the free bus from Noosa we headed an hour south towards Australia Zoo, set up by Steve Urwin. The Zoo is huge and took us hours to explore. Free shows and feedings are available. We took advantage of this and headed to watch the main animal show. This consisted of birds, snakes, and most importantly the crocs. The trainers brought one of them out and attempted to feed the croc infront of us, pretty impressive. However later in the day we saw the proper croc feeding, two whole chickens in which the trainer lured the croc up to the food where he was perched on a podeum dangling the food over the water. The croc had a pretty impressive jump to him and you could hear the snap of his teeth when he took the food from him, ripping it apart.
The zoo is host to a range of animals including otters, kangaroos, koala, wambats, snakes, birds, crocs, elephants and tigers. We saw a display from the elehpants showing the true colour of their skin and how sensitive they are, and a bit of information about the upkeep of the animals. One had a bath to wash the mud from him and his colour underneath was beautiful. He turned from a pale brown to a lucious black with bronzed speckles across his body, most promeant on his trunk.
The animals are the zoo are very dosile to the point that we were able to get right next to the kangaroos to feed them, pat them and lye down for photos of course. Such long legs stretched out when they lay down and lovely and soft to touch.
The highlight of my trip had to be holding one of the koalas. So little and cute and cuddly, could have stayed there all day. They're very brittle so you had to be gentle and just hold them, stoking their coats being careful not to squeeze them too tight. But he just happily sat their, claws holding on to you like a baby's hands would grip you. It was brilliant!
