Hi everyone,
Sorry I havn't done an update in a while, this is what we have been up to.
Ok so the cloud finally lifted of Franz Josef glacier and we were able to do our Heli hike which was one of the most amazing things i have ever done in my life - yes it was that good!! The helicopter ride up was un real as there was a snowfall over night and then clear skies with sunshine so the colour of the snow was amazing.
When we landed we got on our gear and started to walk across the glacier, the glacier was much better than the one at fox, as it had blue ice and lots more formations. Our guide found a cave and said to us to go through - i thought he was joking as it wasnt a big cave! he told us there was an opening at the other side and wanted us to crawl through as you can see blue ice inside.Â
Everyone went through on hands and knees but i slid down on my tummy and giggled all the way through!!!! people we being careful going through but i treated it like a water slide. When i got to the other side everyone was laughing as i didnt realize it echoed my giggling in the cave and everyone said they wished they did it my way!
After Franz josef we went to Greymouth - and yes it was very grey there! this is where i did my caving (see photos). It was good but also lots of hard work, you were out for over 5 hours climbing over everything and going through water falls, my fav bit was when we got to sit in rubber rings and float off into the darkness and look up at the gloworms, was like looking up at the stars.
After greymouth we went to Nelson which was really nice, it had people and shops which is more than most of the places we have visited in the south island! Next we went to Kaikoura where we went whale watching which was good, got to see 2 sperm whales and 1 humpback whale as well as seals. first off all i thought 3 wasnt many but the guide said that they normally see only 1 and that is classed as being good. the boat had a hydrophone which could listen to the sonic waves the whales give out so they were able to track the whales down.
Today we are in Picton where we are here for only 1 day before we get the ferry over to the north island - lets hope for some sunshine!!!!!!
take care xxxx Joss xxxx
