If we thought Perth was hot we were in for a surprise. The day we landed in the tiny airport at Ayers Rock was floating around the 43 44 degrees C mark! I've never felt heat like it before! Anyway we caught the bus to Uluru Backpackers place where we got a dorm. It was the biggest dorm i've ever seen with about 25 - 30 beds in the same room!
We had decided to stay in Ayers Rock for 3 days, this turned out to be a mistake. Apart from the rock, we were in a desert and therfore had nothing to do. The rock itself only takes one day, so for the remaining time we chilled by the swimming pool, playing stupid games like how long we could hold our breath for underwater while the other person tried winding you. The night times were even more boring as the whole place was full of boring old people, and the bar had a awful country and western band on that literally only knew two songs. To escape it me and Jack decided to take a short walk over the desert to the town centre (consisting of 3 shops). We followed a path lit by small lights, and this turned out to be fascinating. All the animals of the desert had swarmed to these lights and were fighting each other. This amused us for about an hour before we headed for an early bed due to geting up to witness the sunrise the following morning.
At an ungoldy hour we woke up and headed out on a bus for one of the most anticipating sunrises in the world. Unfortunately it didnt turn out to be like you see in the pictures, and instead of a bright red spectacular start to the day, it just gradually got lighter. It was a bit of a disappointment but we knew there would always be sunset.
For the remainder of the day we managed to get on a tour of Ayers Rock where a guy drove us around and explained all about the aboriginal beliefs and why Ayers Rock is the way it is. We also took a few hours to walk around the base of the rock We had wanted to climb the rock but due to bad weather it wasn't aloud to go ahead. Nevertheless it really did look quite spectacular. The only down side to the walk was the flies. Basically the whole of Ayers Rock is covered with the most annoying flies you can imagine. They have a strange nack of managing to find your eyes and ears. Its difficult to imagine but they were everywhere and even made our bags turn black due to the shear numbers of them!
After our walk had finished we returned to the hostel to watch the sunset. Furtunately it was a much better sunset than the sunruse had been and the red of the desert really came out. We flew out the following day to Cairns and strangely as rememberance of Ayers Rock a fly had somehow managed to get into the area between the two pains of glass on the window of the plane. So as the plane departed we took a little bit of Ayers Rock with us.
