Hi everyone,
So today is Sunday and we are absolutely shattered. The first 2 weeks in school have been mental already. We started 2 weeks ago but had an inset day and then a couple of days without teaching, so this past week has been the first full week. We have already...
- Had trials for the school 'dragons teams' where we have all had to help out due to ridiculously high numbers of students trying to represent their schools.
- Had football fixtures at school and during the weekend competing against local teams.
- Had a whole year 3 and 4 cross country event at school with fancy wristband tagging systems, enclosures for runners and parents everywhere. The parents and students have been desperate to know their places and their times which is just such a change from England - I love it!
- Had a staff social at a restaurant called Pietro's with free food and drinks!
- Had a PE social at a lovely restaurant in Changkat (which is the equivalent of going to town on a night out) called Giovani's with buffet food and all you can drink prosecco and wine! (Dangerous!)
- And a newbies debrief in the local pub on Friday to fill each other in about our first week experiences!
All in 1 week!
Considering this place runs on Malaysia time, it's pretty impressive the amount of things that get done!
It's been nice to get into a routine too. Jono has found a football team called the Viking's so is off and about playing for them which is great, and I've joined a netball team and go to yoga with some of the girls from school which is really great, overlooking the jungle!
Weekends here are fabulous! Not just because we live in an amazing complex with sky lounges, gyms, saunas, loads of pools, jacuzzis, hot tubs, sky beach, rooftop jungle and hammocks, indoor cinema, outdoor cinema, bbq areas everywhere, games rooms, kitchens, lounges to hire on top of the building and loads of infinity pools (sorry about the brag there); but also because on our doorstep is the jungle, Sri Hartamas (a little Malaysian village with all the restaurants, spas and little shops you could need), the plaza (where Sports Direct is! and a market on Thursdays) and obviously KLCC, the main city.
Last week we went into Chinatown and practised our haggling skills. It was really funny and definitely an experience. I have never seen so many fakes of everything you can think of! Make up, trainers, bags, watches, footbal tops. Everything! It's mental there and that was in the afternoon, as we were leaving they were setting up more stalls down the centre of the streets which must have been manic!
Last night was another birthday party so we hired out the kitchen at the top of the building and ordered in the most amazing Thai food. The food here is amazing and you can order in whatever you want...including MACDONALDS! As if! Also here, everyone and I mean everyone has a maid. They will clean, cook and look after your children for a really small amount. Our friend is 21 and has just come back to Garden School after going to uni in England. He has the same maid he had when he was a kid here and so we laugh at him all the time as she is basically a second mum. She leaves him food in the fridge to heat up, baked him an amazing graduation cake and made us all a huge pot of curry and rice for Karoline's birthday party. It's honestly, another world!
I'll love you and leave you now, it's Malaysia day on Tuesday so we're off work but tomorrow we have to dress up in traditional Malaysian dress (whatever that is?! there are sooo many different cultures here it's hard to know) so I need to go and find some clothes.
Adios all! Have a great week x
