Hello everybody,
I'm coming to the end of ten day terrific days here in Hong Kong. It was definitely a bit of a culture shock after Cambodia! I've been so lucky, staying with Sandy an old flatmate of mine from Stoke Newington who's a lawyer out here. He's put me up in his 21st floor appartment and treated me to plenty of good meals and lots of drinks! I owe a lot in the favour bank now!
Hong Kong is insane, there are skyscrapers galore and endless bars and restaurants. I've managed to explore most of the neighbourng islands, that's an advantage about Hong Kong, you're only a ferry ride away from some good hiking and a bit of peace and quiet. Lamma island was my favourite, hardly anyone there, no cars, deserted beaches and plenty of seafood.
I got the chance to meet my brother for a night which was a great laugh and I've been indulging in all those western comforts I missed in SE Asia. In no particular order: burgers, hot water in the shower, toilets you can actually put toilet paper in, rooms without cockroaches, etc.. I am missing getting hassled in the street though! I keep expecting people to swarm round me and flog me motorbike rides, books, food, farmyard animals, but people leave you to it out here!
The skyline in Hong Kong is unreal, slightly marred by all the smog (which the weather reports seem to refer to as haze rather than plain old pollution!) I even saw a bizarre light show performed on the skyscrapers, accompanied by really bad 80s music.
I'm not too keen on putting that backpack on again, but time to leave the comforts and head to some crummy hostels in Cairns. It's a tough life...
Hope everybody's on good form,
Lerve
