Day 85 (Tuesday 9th January 2007)
After doing the city yesterday, today we hit the beaches. Unfortunately the beaches are right beside the city, so as well as getting completely lost again, we had to pay 85 toll charges to pass over, under and through it. Marc's still curious to know why anyone would want to pay to get in to this place anyway!
We packed up some lunch and did the beautiful cliff-top walk from Coogee to Bondi and back. The weather brightened up into a glorious sunny day and we took in the sights of Gordons Bay, Shark Point at Clovelly Bay, Beeries Cove, Bronte, Nelson, Tamarama and Mackenzie Bays, whilst occasionally catching a refreshing cool spray from the South Pacific swell, as it crashed against the rocks.
Lifeguards were only letting the most experienced swimmers into the sea and we did watch a few crazy surfers risking it all out in the humongous waves. The beaches were pretty packed and by the time we'd made it to Bondi, the famous beach was chocker. We didn't stay long, just took a few pictures before retracing our steps the whole way back to Coogee.
The beaches were ok (great if you like rubbing shoulders with the person next to you), the surfing pretty pointless against the huge, swirling foam monsters and the swimming pretty perilous. At least we can say we've seen it all, although it was kind of 'so what', especially for the ever-impressed Marc.
When we returned from our 90-mile hike, 'Fran's temperature gauge read 'hotter than the surface of the sun' and as we began what would turn out to be a harrowing journey back to camp, the clock on the dash displayed 17:08...rush hour!!
Was this it? Had we been cast into the lake of fire and brimstone? For we had just become two puppets for Satan himself, cooking and melting within his burning cauldron of hell!!!!!
No, we were lost in the seering heat, smack bang in the middle of the CBD, whilst 4-million cockroaches (3,999,995 of which Asians), scurried their way home!
We made it back to the campsite just as the sun was going down, which will give you some indication of how painful an experience today's evening was when we tell you it doesn't get dark until 21:00. Once out of the CBD we must have visited just about every suburb on our torturous journey.
We didn't argue about it once and just laughed the whole thing off all the way back...yeah right!! On the upside our little detour did give us one last chance to see the splendid bridge and Opera House...'cause there's no way Marc's ever going back!! [At which point Sarah points out: we fly from Sydney airport on March 19th] b*****!!
