Finally had time to sit down properly and write a post! These past few days have been manic. The flight was very good, Manchester to Frankfurt went as expected, with your typical cramped space, and annoying passenger sat next to us. Our tickets for the Frankfurt-Beijing leg were off however, as me and Sammy didn't have seats next to each other. We queried it, and the people on the desk couldn't re-arrange any seats, as Economy class was full. As the fault was not ours (as we'd reserved online and checked in on time) they upgraded us to Business class free of charge! Quite an experience, and total luxury. Thank you to whoever had seat 71A, and thank you Lufthansa for rectifying it in the way that you did!
Once we got to Beijing the experiences just kept on wracking up. The school that we're currently teaching in is about 8000 feet from the hotel, but to try and walk it would be a killer. Either because of the heat, which is mid to high 20's by 7am, or because of the traffic, which appears to have little to no rules. I've yet to see a speed limit, or a consistent approach to the idea of traffic lights, or any form of lane discipline. A taxi we rode in earlier was weaving in and out between cars, right behind a police car!
Teaching has been a phenominal experience these past 3 days. At 7 hours a day, it's been very draining, but the clichéd statement of seeing faces lighting up with comprehension makes it all worth while. The kids seem extremely eager (for the most part) and are always cheerful and seemingly amazed to see us and hear us speak. I'm really looking forward to Pingxiang now, but I'm a little wary that I'll be teaching older students, and may not get quite the same level of enthusiasm.
We get to go and look at the Forbidden City and the Great Wall this weekend, so touristy mode will be engaged!
