Summary: drinking wine with Sean Connery
So we left San Francisco in our rented white Toyota Prius. The licence plate said ACE, and we say Americans don't do irony. Off we headed over the Golden Gate Bridge in our battery powered milk float headed for wine country.
An hour's drive and we arrived in the town of Napa. I think there were 4 streets in total. We got completely baffled in the tourist information office by two old biddies who kept talking over each other and throwing random leaflets at us. They could easily have been the inspiration for the couple who run the charity shop in League of Gentlemen.
There's not much to do in Napa except drink wine, so that's what we did. We hired a guide for the day, who in this episode was played by Sean Connery as Indiana Jones' father (see photo). He drove us from winery to winery in his massive SUV so we could do all the different tastings.
Wine tasting in Napa Valley is different to any other we've done, in that you have to pay to taste the wines but then they pour you about 1/3 of a glass each time, and you get 4 glasses at each place. We did 5 or 6 wineries (the memory is hazy) in a day, and by the end of it Kath was very drunk. I know this for a fact because she said so repeatedly, in between telling people they looked like Sean Connery or Billy Bob Thornton.
Apparently Napa Valley is second only to Disneyland as America's no. 1 tourist destination, so it gets flooded with rich Americans getting p*ssed whilst pretending to have a cultural experience. There was lots of complicated wine chat intended to bamboozle the customer at the wineries, and it obviously worked on us because we ended up buying quite a few bottles of wine and spending more than we'd hoped for. All in all a cracking diversion though, and well worth the drive from San Francisco.
Love,
Jon & Kath
