Today was the cycling trip. After a minimum of training I set off on a 62 mile/100 kilometer jaunt through the New Forest. It was a bright but cool, even chilly day with a little more wind than one would want.
Nevertheless it was fine and clear, The event began at 7.30 but I did not get away until about 8.45 am. Leaving with maybe 30 others I soon fell behind them eg by the end of the track from the stadium. I then had to stop after 1 mile, having forgotten my 2 bananas!. After that it was plain sailing, even cycling as we headed into the forest.
Great scenery and oen roads, with only the rare, odd idiot about. One car decided that cyclists could not overtake other cyclist so blasted his hon loud and long. Another, in a large Volvo on a very narrow road made a equally loud noise, drove off the edge of the road and tried to prove that cars have more rights than mere cyclists.
Plenty of food after 35 miles and then for the last part. This had a few more climbs, but none that should challenge anyone. As for me I nearly stopped on one very short sharp climb but forced myself up and rode the whole length.
A great day and I do feel a sense of achievement haveing managed all of the 62 miles plust the 3 miles from campsite to start. Got my T shirt and medal.
The downside, although it did not affect me, were that some locals set out to disrupt the event by dropping tacks on the road in Bransgore and about 20 cyclists were punctured. Why is that some people seem to get so hot under the collar about cyclists: we are allowed on teh roads!
