Les Landes, Les Plages, Les Arbres
After our visit to Spain and Portugal we have now arrived in France for the last 12 days of our trip. We hope to get some fair weather, flat roads and relaxation!
The journey from Haro was fraught with problems arising out of a problem with the technology. Who says Satnav's don't work properly? Well Meryl will agree with you. I think she has a distrust of them so she tries to marry them to a map and this is a challenge. I had hoped to avoid the toll roads in Spain and France, partly because they cost money and partly because the do not let one see the 'real' Spain or France, just long ribbons of tarmac and lots of speeding vehicles.
As I am sure you will now have worked out, we did actually use said toll roads! In Spain the route was not to bad in that it took us through the mountains/hills which protect the Rioja wine region from the cold Atlantic winds. There were some fine sights and many tunnels on the two hour drive to San Sebastian.
The French leg, however, was flat and easy although trying to match a 10-year-old map to the roads on the ground was far from easy. Eventually we arrived in Biscarosse, where we planned to stay at a large campsite with lots of facilities. The size was a little off putting, with its vast collection of mobile homes, cafes and bars. However, once the weekend had gone and the weekends had gone home and back to work/school the site returned to something more likeable. And quiet!
