4th September 2011 -Venice
Okay so in Venice were staying at a CONTIKI village with a few other tours. I am in a room with Zoe and JC. I was dish pig at this place (at every CONTIKI place we stay people are nominated cookies and dishes to help out). We had some Spaghetti Bolognese and salad. It was hot in the tent so our crew all went outside and sat together in a big group.
Tonight our bus driver and his band were playing at the bar so we went for a look and few quiet drinks and a dance. The band was quite impressive. They were called 2 guys and an idiot and they played so many instruments: bongos, hymonica, guitar, bass and violin. Now Zoe had disappeared for a good while before I left to go to bed. I walked into our room and no one was there. I went to use the bathroom and found Zoe curled around the toilet on a puddle of chunky vomit. Charming. I picked her up and put her in bed and went to the kitchen to grab some serviettes to clean what I could up and I'd give Zoe the mop in the morning.
The next day was our full day in Venice. It was off to breakfast for a quiche/omelette bake and toast. Then to clean dishes.
We caught a boat into Venice as Venice was built on a lagoon so instead of roads they have canals.
Little Spoon, Conor and I roamed the streets it was so peaceful this early in the morning. Most shops were still closed so we did a fair bit of walking to suss the place out. The walkways can be so narrow at times. Not many of them would even squeeze a car in. We found the markets and so much fruit!! Yum! It was only 11am and we were hungry so we had some pizza (I had fruit as you all know I'm not a great pizza fan I did however have some of Little Spoons pizza gondola). We then walked to the church and had a quick look, again another stunning church. It was then time to meet up with the group for a glass blowing demonstration. There is so much of this stuff for sale in Venice it's ridiculous. We watched a guy make a water jug, it took him a whole 5 minutes and no doubt they would charge a good 500 euro for it.
We then waited downstairs for our tour manager. This is where Tim proceeded to show us this little thong flipping game he does when he's bored. So there we are in the middle of Venice flipping our thongs all over the street.
We then headed to the river to geton a gondola. So here we are in Venice, sipping on Italian champagne in a gondola. We went down tiny canals, they are so dirty, I'm pretty sure I got splashed with the water so I've probably got scabies now or something of the like. When we were coming back into dock. Little Spoon says to me:
"hey he looks like Matt Damon" and didn't think anything of it. I replied "it probably is there is a film festival on here at the moment" in that second we started yelling "Hey Matt, Matthew!!!" and would you believe Matt Damon turned around and waved to us... in our gondola... in Venice. And who else was with him - none other then Gwen Paltrow - looking as stunning as ever. Little Spoon and I were so proud of spotting them it was definitely the highlight of the day. We then celebrated with a drink theit was back to the campsite. When we were in line for the boat I started talking to a Dutch couple. I asked them if I looked Dutch and they said yes - because of the blonde hair and my height- I didn't have the heart to tell them my hair snit blonde haha. On the boat back there was this little border collie pup that had been out and about all day and she was so tired, I had to give her a cuddle. She reminded me so much of Meggy. Such a sweet little thing. Her owners were another Dutch couple and we got talking about traveling, Australia, holland, my family and theirs then I had to have a brag and pull out my phone and show them a few photos of our dogs. they we so lovely. I must be drawn to dutch people I couldn't believe how many I spoke to and I'm not even in Holland yet! In love telling them my name, dads name and mums Dutch name and they are like "yea your definitely Dutch" haha. Loving it!!
We headed back to camp where we had a barbecue. No sausages though weirdest BBQ ever! We had BBQ chicken and pork. Well I just had chicken. It was then time to get our masks we bought today on for our masquerade party. We had slot of fun, there was a broken bed involved quite possibly because there was ten people on it, but don't worry folks - Farmer Jo fixed it!!
It was a good night despite a slight altercation with Little Spoon and a bus driver from another tour - I played Mother Hen and dragged him away.
We are up bright and early tomorrow Vienna bound (Austria).
