2nd September 2011
Okay so today was our free day in Rome. So much to see so little time and the bite the sun would certainly be contributing factor as to how much we would see.
First stop for our little crew (Emma, little spoon, Andrew & conor) was the forum which would also get us into the colosseum quickly rather than having to line up. The forum consisted of ruins from the Romans from as early as 36 AD. amazing!! There were a lot of buildings that had crumbled but so much still in tact which was pretty incredible.
From the forum it was off the the colosseum. I had watched gladiator the night before to help me appreciate this magnificent piece of history. So many people were killed In this place, it blows my mind, and all for entertainment - pretty sick really. Watching people tear others apart for the sake of having nothing better to do. The floor was missing so all the tunnels where the gladiators would get ready was exposed. The columns around here were held only together by iron rods. Which were taken out when it was built and the columns stayed in tack. I would imagine that reinforcements have since been put in to maintain it's structure.
Following this is it was time for lunch. Pasta please!! Thought I'd better try some spaghetti Bol. Delicious!!
We then met up with the rest of the crew and it was off to the Vatican City. We entered and were assigned our tour guide. We visited the tapestries and the sistheenth chapel- amazing. Simply amazing. Zoe myself and Emma then proceeded to get lost but did stumble across the pop mobile and the old horse tack and carts from back in the day. We then ran to St Peters basilica where our audio for our tour guide kicked in and we were able to find our group again. This was so incredible. Absolutely massive and so pretty. The peak of the dome stands at 120m high.
It was then onto the Monk church. I forget what it's called but its a mass grave pretty much under a church of monks. But they aren't buried, their bones decorate the rooms. Skulls, fingers, pelvis', everything was used to decorate this amazing mass grave. It is stunning but did creep me out that these were all people and their bodies have been pulled apart in order to create what is now a massive tourist attraction.
It then some gelati and then back to camp. It was parmas for dinner tonight. Then Little Spoon (Thomas the little brother I never had- lives on a farm in Tassie) and I watched Funny People the movie then it was to the bar for our last drinks in Rome and a funny game of I Never.
Tomorrow we Venice bound.
