Hello, all.Thank you for your kind e-mails and messages.I hope the 4th was enjoyable and filled with fun fireworks.Alex and I successfully found a computer with USB ports yesterday, but it would not allow us to log into this site. The guy that runs this shop says that the USB on the main computer here will work today, so we will see.
Anyway, we arrived in Pondy safewly yesterday via bus.The station we stopped in to get a ride is the largest bus station in Asia.It wasn't nearly as packed as we had anticipated, and it was quite easy to find a ride. The bus ride along the coast was pretty awesome.Including get to see the rest of Chennai, we were able to see the farming communities of the area along the coast as well as how they extract salt from the seawater. The bus ride was not much different than a taxi, except the buses are much bigger and the driver knows it.We didn't stop or slow down for anything or anyone (except for some cows that we had to swerve around a few times).
We have a pretty nice view from our hotel room. The food is expensive here compared to Chennai since it is more touristy. We met up with some students from northern India that are living here to study French for a year and a half.Including the students, everyone here is incredibly nice, and so long as we ask for a price upfront, everyone is honest.
Today, Alex and I walked through the Botanical Gardens and plan to go north to see one of the main temples of the city, Manakula Vinayagar Temple, both of which were recommended by our books and the locals. The Botanical Gardens were pretty nice, but not too many of the plants were in bloom. It was interesting though since it was the only one on the east coast and had many species of trees that do not live anywhere else in the region.Apparently, it is around 100 years old and used to be 17.5 acres when the French took care of it as some sort of plant life experiment. We saw some pretty neat bugs in there. We also went into the aquarium in the garden, which was pretty much just like walking into a fish store in the states except for with fewer species of fish.
Now, I will try to load my pictures up.Take care, everyone.
