We had a lazy start to the day with a late breakfast. We also managed to get some washing done and a little shopping. This was all a precursor to our main activity today which was a small group tour of the Vatican Museum and special access to the Sistine Chapel.
We weren't quite sure what to expect from the tour. Well I would have to say it was well worth it. The access we got to areas usually not accessible such as the Bramante Staircase, the Gallery of Statues and to an outside balcony with magnificent views of Rome was quite amazing.
There were far too many highlights and I have way too many photos to do it justice. I have posted a small selection of photos.
The extra special part of the tour was unique access to the Sistine Chapel after closing time. There were just 15 of us and our guide in the Chapel. This access was just amazing. We were instructed from the start that no photographs could be taken in the Chapel so what happened next was very rare.
Due to some special visitors our access was disrupted and as a result the guard escorting use gave permission for us to take photos as a form of compensation. A selection of the resulting photos are in a separate album. The ceiling and the main wall above the altar were painted by Michelangelo. This was truly a special place. I'm not sure we will to this experience.
After the Vatican we walked back across the river and into central Rome where we picked up the clothes bought yesterday and Nicole managed to find a nice pair of white jeans. We then had dinner and returned to our room.
