We flew into Cochi airport, about 2 hours late, so were pleased to see that our hotel had sent the taxi to collect us. We'd met a really nice couple at the airport called Lauren and Andy, so they jumped in the cab with us tired and hungry after a full day of travelling. En route our driver got bumped by a lorry and proceeded to chase down the lorry at high speed ..... when he finally got the lorry to stop all hell broke loose and they started to have a fight. Not just an argument, but an actual physical scrap, then a few other blokes joined in then they all disappeared leaving us in the car in a very dark street in the middle of nowhere...... What a way to start the southern leg of the tour!! And we'd been desperate to get away from the madness of the north!!
We eventually got our driver back in one piece, and got taken to our place for the night. The hotel didn't offer any apology, so we voted with our feet the next day and left in search of somewhere friendlier and cheaper. We found that alright, but with a few bed bugs for company, and cold water, but hey you can't have luxury all the time!
Anyway, Cochin is a great town, with loads to see, a fantastic history, lovely people and a really nice laid back holiday feel to it. Well worth a few days visit. We were gagging for a beer by day two, and due to the bizarre and expensive regulations around alcohol sales, could get 'special tea' or 'cold tea' served in a teapot, with mugs to drink from! Great stuff, it all tasted good at the end of a hot day, so we didn't care!
