We decided to take the ferry to Uruguay. From BA, it takes only an hour and you're in Colonia del Sacramento. (to Montevideo it's about three hours and to Punta del Este about five). We're lucky and even though it's Saturday and Colonia is popular with tourists, we still get a cute little room for the night in a lovely old stone hostel overlooking the sea.
The town - founded by the Portuguese in 1680 to smuggle goods across the Rio de la Plata - is charming and there are lots of sailing boats cruising around in the muddy, but still beautiful water surrounding the peninsula.
We had a nice and easy seafood-lunch recommended by the Israeli owner of the hostel, followed by a nice, local cocktail/aperitif in the cutest little garden-cafe at the water: 'Lentas Maravillas' (referring to snails and meaning sth like 'slowly miracles').
The sunset looked amazing from our room and the temperature was still in the high twenties.
After dinner and wine on a plaza with locals playing music around us, we could only laugh about the shower in our room (which was clearly lacking water) and the creaky bed...
