After leaving Westport, we headed down the coast along what is known as one of the most beautiful and scenic coastal drives in the world. It really was stunning, and as I said before, even though it was raining it just made the rugged and raw coastline seem more majestic. We stopped for a short coastal walk along the way and saw a seal colony which was pretty cool! We also stopped at the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, which are incredible eroded rock formations along the West Coast. I can't really describe them in words, so you will have to check out my photos on facebook or ask me to send you some.
We stopped at a town called Greymouth on our way down the coast to do a spot of shopping, as that night we would be staying at a small place on Lake Mahinapua, where it is tradition for the 84 year old publican (believe it or not, it is true!) to cook the Kiwi bus group a delicious and HUGE steak dinner, and to host a fancy dress party! Our theme was "what I want to be when I grow up" which is a pretty loose topic to be honest. I had no idea what to go as, so when I saw a viking hat in a party shop, I decided to go with that! Bargain cheap, I was sold. Some people had great ideas; my friend Max, who is THE biggest chain smoker I know, bough a no smoking sign and went as "when I grow up I want to be a non-smoker", which to anyone who knows him well is a simple yet hilariously ironic idea! It was great! Needless to say, everyone went all out with the costumes, and we had a FANTASTIC night. It was possibly the best night of the whole trip so far for me. Great fun and a bucket of laughs!
That's about it for now, I'm now in Franz Josef and am planning to stay a few days here. You'll have to wait for the next update now to see what I get up to!
Lots of love
Joelle
