Albany W.A. TuesdayRather uninspiring drive from Esperance and for some reason we both felt rather tired so when we got settled on the site we dashed off to the shop for something for tea and that was us for the night..This morning the weather was overcast with light rain and we decided Whale World was the best option.Whale WorldAbout a 20 min. drive from Albany with one or two things to see on the way which we thought we would do on the way back but as it happened we needed to get back to the town and we missed them maybe tomorrow.Whale World is very good and kept us interested for 4 hours. It's in the last whaling station operating in Australia which closed in 1978.Mostly as it was then except for some things removed for safety and the dead whales of course. Not for the squeamish or whale lovers. A good tour or you can do a self guided tour either way you pay $20 or $18 for we seniors.Good shop and café.The Amity BrigA full size replica of the ship which brought the first English settlers to W.A.Very well sited on the sea front in the centre of town and although it is on dry land it has water in front of it and doesn't look marooned. You can go down inside and there is a commentary. No one there in charge so you pay into an honesty box.We wondered why the name sounded familiar and of course it is the same boat which brought the first settlers to Redcliffe. This was what it was used for to transport convicts, soldiers and their families to the new penal settlements. Both of today's experiences brought home to us the sheer guts of the people who built this country granted in the case of the convicts not by choice but right up to the 1950s - 1970s by the people in the whaling industry a dangerous, filthy job in a contentious trade but one which fashioned this town which suffered terribly when whaling ceased and took ten years to recover.Tomorrow we have to have the car in by 9am for a service so what we do will depend on how long that takes.
