We stayed at a place called Rainbow beach which is the gateway to get to Fraser Island, which is the worlds largest sand island, its said that all the sand from the East coast eventually ends up there. We did a 3 day/2 night self drive 4x4 here..We stayed at Dingos hostel and they assign you to groups.. In our group there were 9 people.Me, Jo, Lynn, Chris, Dan, Jamie, Jamie, Greg ( 4 devon lads) and a Brazilian girl called Carrie who didn't speak lol!! The lads were loads of fun, we had to camp on the beach which wasn't so fun as we had sand bloody everywhere you cant get away from the stuff. We did whip up some pretty good camp food though - Steak and Potatoes and chicken stir-fry, scrambled eggs etc, and the crunchiness of the sand really topped it off. Lol. We also took 4 litres of GOON each ( cheap wine in a carton) so there were 32 litres altogether plus over 100 cans of Beer ( which were all drunk over the 2 nights lol and me and Jo didn't even drink on the second night so that tells you what a bunch of p*ss heads we were with he he) My favourite thing about Fraser Island was Lake Mckenzie, it was a gorgeous fresh water lake infused with Tea tree oil, it looked just like a beach but was a million times better, the sand there is pure white and so fine it's a great exfoliator everybody was taking big handfuls and rubbing it all over themselves. I felt like a babies bum when I got out :P.
It was a bit scary driving along the beach as there was so much stuff on the roof I kept thinking we were going to topple over but we didn't luckily, and we didn't get charged for any damage despite going through the salt water many a time and having a tiny chip in the windscreen.. whoops!!
You can't swim in the sea here because its infested with sharks and the current is so strong but the lakes were great.
We also went to a place called Eli creek, which was just a creek right in the middle of the island and it was freshwater you could just walk through it, it was so refreshing but full of big fat Eels.
All in all I thought Fraser was loads better than the whitsundays probably because we had such a great group. Loved it!!!
