We crossed the border today into Vietnam! The border crossing went quick and smooth. Once across the border we went for a traditional Vietnamese lunch. I had Pho beef noodle soup. It was delicious. Similar to that in Canada, but the noodles were larger.
We headed to the Mekong Delta area where we spent the night in a traditional homestay. The Mekong Delta is rich in natural resources because their soil is moist an rich in nutrients. They can grow anything they want all year round. The people here look much healthier than those is Cambodia because they have more than enough to eat.
Our homestay was in a small traditional community. The way of life here is to stay home with family because it is so easy to grow everything you need. They keep their ancestors close by burying them in their yard. As we were looking around the home we noticed two graves right beside our bedroom.
The man that provides his home for the homestay is one of the only people in the community who speaks English. He has tourists come and stay in his home so they can get closer to the community and have a better idea of how the people live. This along with his crops are his income.
We did a walking tour of the community. There is water everywhere. No area has not been taken over by plants. We saw many banana trees, bamboo, mango, pineapple, papaya, jackfruit and many others. There is electricity in the community and many homes had a tv playing. The community has a shed that is a fish farm where they grow lobsters and fish.
After the tour, the group played cards at the home. Some other group members taught me the English version of s*** head. It was great, I'll have to teach everyone when I get back.
The host family made us Vietnamese pancakes for dinner. They were really good. It looks like and egg but it is rice flour omelet type thing. Then they fill it with meat, bean sprouts and green onions. They brought out so much other food too. We had spring rolls, fried dumplings, green beans, rice cake things, squash stew and rice. Everything was so good it they just kept bringing out more food and we could not possibly eat it all.
After dinner we played some more cards. It was a fun night playing games and stuff. Then we headed to bed with our mosquito nets because our rooms are open to the outdoors.
