Hello
Wednesday we walked up mount Eden which is a volcano (not active) in Auckland. Was pretty cool you could see the crater. We picked up our car and have been heading north.Gizzy (our car) is very very slow. She doesn't like hill's or straight- ok on downhill!!!!!
The last 2 night we spent a Pahiri Beach Holiday park in a cabin. It was a campsite with caravans (mum you would have loved it) and tents and cabins. Our cabin was a basic one so just a hut with beds. We didn't realise when we booked it but as it was a camp site opposed to a hostel for cooking you needed all you own pots and pans etc!!!!! Oh dear!!! We made do!! When we arrived we went on a long walk- there was a beach 9 km right next to our cabin. Then headed back and cleverly ccooked sausage, beans & jacket.
When out long walk we saw some guys carring a bag of Mussles- so that was our task for the next day. catch our dinner!!! So yesterday we walked to the end of the beach & waited for the tide to go out (took about 2 hrs) and then we found them. Hundreds of Mussles and they were massive. About 4' long and actually quite heavy. We picked about 80. We needed white wine to cook them in so took a drive in the car GIZZY and found a Vine Yard. Met a really nice man who let us try his wines and we bought a red and a white. He explained how he made the wine and answered a few questions we had. Then we had the task of cleaning the mussles- took ages- the help of a penknife and a very blunt table knife eventually we got there after much of George's moaning!!!!!
Next problem is no oven and no saucepan- so we bought some foil- made a pan and and cooked them on the BBQ. Worked very well except a small overflow!!!! Tasted GREAT. Chtted to a french couple- Manon (strangly) & Vincent. George and Vincent decided to go down to the sea at about 10pm to catch some fish- unfortunatly they failed!!!!!
Headed up to Bay of Islands today. Stopped off on the way and did a really nice walk. Saw the Kauri Trees and Whangarei Waterfalls. Some pic's on the way. Then continued here- THE BAY OF ISLANDS- Amazing. Very pretty. A bit more touristy than we have seen so far but it is nice. Some nice bars and restaurants and lotsof tour you can do- i recommend it for a holiday when you have more money to spend.
We are going to cook some lamb styeaks for tea and go out for a couple drinks then up early for a day tour of the Bay of Islands and hopefully swim with dolphins.
Lots of love- keep the messages coming
Jo & George
