Hi folks
Update so far. We met some of our friends in Rome Stella and Dave met us on one of their onshore visits from their cruise. It was really good to see them but I nearly got them lost on our way to Trevi Fountain never mind we did get back to their meeting point in time to have Italian ice-cream before they left again.
Went to the Vatican and up Mount Garibaldi with fantastic views of the city and a place both of us had remembered from years back.
Back on the road again - bikes still with us and bums suitably recovered for the next stretch to Naples. We made real good time to Naples even though we did stop at an idyllic sandy beach in the National Circeo Park. Once again we found a campsite that was nearly deserted and due to close three days later. This will be our next test - finding campsites that are open mid september. Our final stretch into Naples was going to be a steady 15 miles and a find a campsite, do the washing and prepare our route to go through Naples but the best laid plans often go assunder on this trip and first we couldn't find a campsite open anywhere and the areas we were going through were to say the least - rundown. As we were studying the map a friendly local cyclist stopped to offer help!!!!! This help turned out to be leading us the best part of 12 miles at a pace that neither of us had done before uphill and down dale. As much as I tried to say he should go on ahead in my broken Italian and his lack of English, the more he was adamnant to show us Italian hospitality and point out local scenes and landmarks. Finally as I collapsed in a heap gasping for fluids and something to give me some energy we had been led to a superb campsite. This campsite, as it turned out, was in a volcano crater. Solfatara Volcano is inactive apart from the flumes of steam and sulphur in the barren half of the crater. While the campsite is in the other half.
From here we,ve visited Naples yesterday and Pompeii today. Naples is an amazing city and is very different from other cities in Italy - it looks really rundown with rubbishlike you've never seen but has an air of vitallity and life about it.
Tommorrow we start heading across italy towards Potenza and Brindisi.
Stay in touch
