Whitneys on Tour
We came to Maracay which is a sizeable city around 60km`s south of our previous destination, Puerto Columbia to stay in a posada, 8km's out of the city centre, recommended by some friends or ours, Neil and Kelly who were here last year.
It is indeed a very nice place and we enjoyed staying here for 4 nights. It's a very homely feeling place ran by a really nice Dutch guy called Bart and we loved having dinner on the outdoor terrace every night. We managed a day trip away to a really cool beach called Playa Cata which involved another 2 hour bone shaking bus ride a la Puerto Columbia. The weather wasn't great that day sadly as north of the mountains the cloud does tend to build up over the jungle. We also managed another day trip with Bart the posada owner who took us to an interesting house owned by a Venezualan 'witch', so called because she can tell fortunes apparantly! She was a really nice lady as it goes except a little eccentric plus we couldn't understand a word she was saying. She even kept a baby caiman in her back garden amongst other animals!
Maracay as a city doesn't have a great deal to recommend it other than the impressive bull fighting stadium and it's as hot as hell too.
Our next destination is Merida, around 12 hours south west of here and we're due to arrive on 31st Janaury
