Whitneys on Tour
We arrived in Palolem via a 13 hour overnight train from Kerala, then a 1 1/2 hour bus ride so it wasn't the best of journeys, however this lovely beach resort made it well worth the trouble.
Palolem is on the southern tip of Goa, a far less developed area than the Benidorm-lite places of the north. The beach is truly lovely, fringed with palm trees and is picture postcard material. As we've come right at the end of the season there are people around but it's not too busy and you can always get a sun lounger on the beach.
The sea water, like in Varkala is incredibly warm, like bath water. To be honest it's actually a little too warm but thats really picking holes and the waves are great for body surfing.
The whole beach has wooden beach huts, bars and restaurants at the back and depressingly this will no doubt all change to buildings of a more concrete variety in years to come - so get here now while you can. Although the beach huts were incredibly cheap to stay in (less than 3 quid a night), we once again opted for a little luxury and stayed at a guest house 10 minutes walk from the beach. We had a huge, airey room there with an ultra comfortable bed and super clean bathroom facilities which you certainly would not have got in a beach hut. When you can stay in this sort of place but still be well within your budget we really don't see the point of cheapskating.
Like Kerala and indeed the rest of India currently the temperatures are well into the 90's every day here which fortunately is made bearable by a lovely cooling breeze on the beach. This has rather fooled far too many tourists and we see some no doubt hideously painful red bodies at the end of every day. Therefore, we stay in the shade untill after four every day, interspersed with lunch and swimming. After showering and changing at the hotel we pain ourselves with a cocktail or two at a bar on the beach before eating at one of the many excellent beach restaurants washed down with a beer or two or glass of wine. It is indeed, hell on earth.
