Whitneys on Tour
We arrived here on 13th April after a 7 hour bus journey (via our reasonably luxurious tour group bus which we now have for 10 days) from Udaipur which also took in a visit to the Jain temple at Ranakpur along the way. The temple is one of the biggest and most important of the Jain religion. We enjoyed a very traditional Indian lunch here served on metal plates and eaten by hand. It didn't look that tasty but it most certainly was and it cost a grand total of 20p for all you could eat.
We only stayed in Jodphur one night but it was a pretty entertaining one, enhanced by our excellent hotel and the local market where we paid a visit for an hour or so. This was in equal measure amusing and irritating as we were obviously centre of attention for the locals who tried to engage us in conversation at every moment. These innocent conversations were intended to lure us into their spice shop or whatever although we somehow managed to resist. This was despite being told that their spice shops were 'used by Sainbury's' and also 'featured on the BBC'. We were staggeringly impressed naturally but we just about managed to leave the market spice free.
The following morning we visited the local Meherangarh fort and were given MP3 players which gave us an interesting but at times rather overlong history of the place. At least you could switch it off or ignore it if it became boring unlike a guide!
Thereafter we made our way north west to Jaisalmer.
