I origonaly visited Colombia to extend my stay in South America and also to visit a friend. I was plesantly surprised how much I liked Colombia and how much, now that I have left, I miss the place.
I arrived on the 24th March and went to stay at a hostel called el Cafecito, there was nobody there and I felt was more like a cafe than a hostel. So I decided to move to another hostel and found DN, a lovely hostel in La Calendaria, the historic part of Bogota. It is a fantastic location to stay in as it felt to me to be in the heart of the Colombian culture surronded by colonial buildings and musseums.
Time seemed to go so fast, it wasn't that I was doing touristy things, I felt it was easy to slip into a lifestyle there as Bogota and Colombia is the least touristy of most of the South American countries. This was such a welcome change, as it give a new feeling to a place. It wasn't chaotic and I felt I had the freedom to discover sights for myself as aposed to being guided to them like it is often in very touristy countries.
It wasn't until I decided to take a very last minute bus to the coast on my last weekend that I truely started to realise how beautiful the country is. I headed up to Santa Marta and stayed in Taganga. The beaches and scenary here is just beautiful, with a really chilled atmosphere. Then finaly I visited Tayrona National Park, which just cannot be discribed. Beach after beach, hardly anyone around, perfectly clean, and surronded by forests which makes for great walks. Pretty much paradise.
Then unfortunatly I had to leave and fly to Peru, with everyone at the hostel talking about what they were planning to see next in Colombia. I was really sad to leave especially as, as I was leaving, everyone at the airport were so friendly.
There's no doubt that I will visit Colombia again, next time spending more time, seeing more of what the country has to offer. I just have to find the time. But for now Colombia has made a lasting impression on me and is definatly one of my favourite countries in this amazing continent.
