We arrived in a rainy Brisbane after several hours on the Greyhound with no air conditioning! After peeling ourselves from the coach seats we headed to Bunk, the hostel that we had been recommended by every travel desk on the East coast. It was a stinker! The first 2 rooms we stayed in were repulsive (one was full of 18 year olds who had lived there for 2 weeks without washing!) Our third room was much better despite a weird French guy who took a banana into the toilet with him every morning and ate it while doing his business, then leaving the skin in the sink....what is wrong with people!?!
We absolutely loved Brisbane though. We saw our first proper Christmas tree in the city centre. This was slightly strange as in 30 degrees celsius heat, wearing shorts and flip flops, it is physically impossible for the human mind to feel in any way festive!
We walked the Brisbane bridge and saw some fantastic views of the city (despite a little rain). We spent the majority of our time on the Southbank where there is a city beach, the wheel of Brisbane (not very high but enough to turn Dan into a nervous wreck at the top!), and the cultural centre with loads of museums and galleries.
We met up with a couple we had first met in Kuala Lumpur. They were staying with friends in a beautiful apartment overlooking the river. After a night out at our hostel bar we spent the next day at their place doing typical backpacker activites such as sitting in a jacuzzi overlooking the Brisbane river...you know how it is! It was nice to get a bit of luxury after the horrors of our hostel.
Brisbane has been great and also really strange as we have randomly bumped into so many more people that we know here than we probably would have than walking down a street at home! Next stop - Byron Bay.
