After seeing mom off we moved to our next guesthouse the Lemonseed. It had received good reviews on Trip Advisor so we booked it. At first we were not very happy, it seemed like we were stuck in some small backalley just off some busy Bangkok street but the room was large and very clean...and the small restaurant in the guesthouse serves up a mean PadThai (a Traditional Thai dish) Once the owner (a brit and his very friendly Thai wife) clued us in we found out we actually found a gem in a terrific location. The busy street with the terminal 24 hour traffic jam was alive with both real restaurants as well as dozens of street vendors selling every type of food you could ever want(or wonder exactly what it is). As well it turns out the Lemonseed was a short 5 minute walk (including a short shuttle ride in a golf cart) through another backalley to the giant Siam Paragon shopping complex that includes a network of three separate shopping centres...in a nutshell...it is HUGE! The entire lower floor of the Siam Paragon is devoted to eating..and this was not just your average mall food court. It consisted of numerous very high end fine dining restaurants (well out of our budget) as well as scores of regular and specialty restaurants....Jan and I were in heaven. We figured we could spend the next three days just wandering and eating our way through the food floor of Siam Paragon. The Thai people seem do 3 things: 1-spend much of each day stuck in traffic jams, 2-work extremely hard day & night and 3-love to eat! Thus we love the Thai people!
THAT MOVIE COST US HOW MUCH!
We heard the Siam Centre had a movie theatre that had reclining seats/couches that we should check out. We had just spent a couple hours eating on the food floor and figured relaxing in a movie would be great. Turns out the entire 5th floor of the mall is a theatre complex that had to have thousands of school aged kids roaming around? Anyway we found someone to help us find this theatre with the large reclining seats. As the movie (Harry Potter) was just starting our young helper guided us to the right place..this does not look anything like a movie theatre back home! We were escorted into very sophisticated looking lounge area where we were given an alcoholic drink, then before going into the theatre we placed an order for food (I had the scallops and Jan the salmon (yeah thats right.. Scallops & salmon) along with another drink order and what type of popcorn we wanted - all to be delivered to us by our waitress (yes we are still in a theatre) during the show. Well we get escorted into the theatre and there are no seats but about 15-18 large 10x10 couches with a small table . There were blankets and pillows of all shapes and sizes to add to our comfort & enjoyment of Harry Potter. Amazing experience as the waitress brought our popcorn and later our food order and drinks (rum coke for me & margaritta for Jan)... The only glitch in an otherwise ultimate pampered movie going experience was that in our rush to make the movie on time and bit of a communication barrier we later realized we just blew almost our daily budget on a movie! But hey... How often can you get a rum & coke with your baked scallops while lying on a couch at a movie...only in Bangkok!
JAN LOOK OVER THERE IT's PAUL McCARTHY!
Turns out our Lemonseed hotel is also just a short walk to Bangkok's skytrain system which is very easy to get around in. Our hotels owner (the Brit - Brian) told us how to get to one of Bangkok's many nightlife districts so off we went at about 9:00 pm. Had a great time had a few beers, ate some more food, went through another couple hundred little Market stalls that are everywhere in Bangkok, when on the way home we stopped into an Irish pub called O'Riens. As we walked around I pointed out a guy to Jan and said "hey there's Paul". Here was this 40'ish Asian guy with a white shirt and skinny black tie with a thick black mop top of hair. Just figured that how they roll out here to pick up the ladies (hey-who am I to judge) Well a few minutes later we see "Paul" start to stroll up to the stage and three other 40'ish Asian lads join him! Turns out this Beatle tribute group have been playing here every Friday for the past 15 or so years and they are an absolute hit! People jump up and dance, sing out the words, and finish lyrics. It was unbelievable THEY ARE GOOD. We had tons of fun....watching 4 Asian guys doing their impression of a British rock group in an Irish pub in Bangkok...cool! Got back to our guesthouse about 1:30am - still a traffic jam on the street by our new home which we have grown to love!
