Friday morning we woke up and had to get ready quickly with stinky-feet man in the room. Our hostel was obviously near an EMT station or something because all night there were sirens going off.And our lovely roommate was hacking up a lung all night long too.So it definitely made for some interesting sleeping. We quickly got ready and headed out for the day.Friday was our big day and we had a lot of stuff planned to see.We stopped at the grocery store down the street and bought a pack of chocolate chip muffins that were absolutely delicious. We ate them while we waited for the metro.Because it was raining again that morning we decided to start with the Louvre because it was indoors. Also, our metro line ran straight to the Louvre so that was pretty nice too.
When we got of the metro we were directly at the entrance to the Louvre. It was absolutely massive! It used to be a palace that was eventually converted into the museum that it is today. We were able to use our sweet museum pass and skip the lines at the entrance to get right in.I had my Paris book that listed some of the highlights of the Louvre so our goal was to see some of the things in my book.We wandered around for a little while and finally figured out where we were.It is so easy to get lost inside there. We saw the Venus de Milo, the Mona Lisa, and a lot of other great artwork. We were inside for about 2 hours. When we exited, we were in the courtyard with the famous glass Pyramids.Obviously I had to take some pictures there! We walked through the Tuileries Gardens, which are the Louvre's gardens. It wasn't raining too badly, but it was still raining so we walked quickly through those and took some pictures. At the end of the gardens is the Place de la Concorde. It has great views of some of the "postcard" sites of Paris. From one corner you can see the Eiffel Tower, from another the Arc de Triomphe, you can look straight through the Tuileries Gardens at the Louvre, and at the other corner are some "Parisian" apartment buildings.
After the Louvre we walked across the River Seine towards the Musée D'Orsay. Our morning was just filled with art.We got there right before it started to rain and lucky us; we got to skip the line again!I loved our museum card.Right when you walk in there was a huge, ornate, gold clock hung up on the wall.It was really neat.We wandered around for a little bit and then found that there was a Van Gogh display going on so we stopped in and checked that out.It was really interesting.Starry Night is usually on display there, but the 3rd floor was having work done on it and of course, that's where it is.So unfortunately we weren't able to see that, which really stunk. After that we were pretty hungry for lunch. But the line for the café was huge and I wasn't about to wait in that line.Outside of the Musée D'Orsay there was a side street with a few cafés.We stopped in at one for lunch and had these amazing chicken sandwiches. The sandwiches were on baguette bread and had mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and chicken breast chunks. We also got a plate of fries to split. It was probably my favorite meal in Paris and it was really reasonably priced.
We walked along the river to go towards the Islands, because there were a bunch of things on the Islands that we wanted to see.All along the river there are artists selling their work, and little stands with postcards and trinkets.I stopped at one artist's stand and bought 3 pictures. They weren't really pencil drawings but they looked like it.I figured they might be nice for in my scrapbook.I also bought a gorgeous painting of the Eiffel Tower at sunset. It was only 10 euro and it's something that I will enjoy a lot more than a figurine of the Eiffel Tower, that's for sure.My leather backpack that I bought in Granada came in so handy during this trip.It was so nice to have that instead of my purse and I was able to easily fit my souvenirs in it too.
After doing a little shopping we wandered onto Ile de la Cite, which is the larger island of the two.We tried to go to the Sainte-Chapelle but it was closed until 2.So we had a little time to kill.Instead, we walked down the street a bit to the Conciergerie. This was where the French kept Marie Antoinette, along with other prisoners, during the French Revolution until she was beheaded. It was really interesting. They had wax figures in the cells to show how the prisoners were kept, and the cell of Marie Antoinette was set up similar to how they believe it was when she was there.By the time we finished there it was late enough that we could go to the Saint-Chapelle.So we walked back down the street to check that out.We had to go through all kinds of security and metal detectors for all of the sights that we went to.One we got inside it seemed pretty small. It was really interesting architecture and everything but it wasn't as grand as we thought it would be.But they were charging people 11 euro to get in so I knew there had to be another part to it.Finally we found a set of stairs that led to one of the most amazing churches I've seen. There were floor to ceiling stained glass windows. It was amazing. They are currently in the process of cleaning the stained glass because it is really dirty.Half of the windows were cleaned when we were there, and that half was absolutely gorgeous. The other half were black they were so dirty. No light was coming through at all.But they had a poster of that it is supposed to look like once everything is cleaned so of course I got a picture of that.I wish the all the windows had been cleaned because I feel like it would have been even more impressive, but it was still really pretty.
Next we went to the Notre-Dame Cathedral! It was later in the day so it was mobbed, but of course when you're in Paris you have to go to the Notre-Dame.We were able to get into the main part for free and it was massive.I must admit it wasn't as amazing as I had expected, but I feel like that happens a lot when something is talked about so much. You have really high expectations. It was still really cool to be in there. After we checked that out we went to the Crypt of course because there are crypts everywhere.I joked with Mike that from now on I'm going to call my basement the crypt too because basically it seemed like if it was downstairs, it was called the crypt. The Notre-Dame crypt was really interesting. There were ruins underneath the church that they found in the crypt. So we checked that out for a little bit before moving on our way.We wanted to go up in the towers, but it was pouring and really windy and we didn't think it'd be worth it to climb all the way up there just to not be able to enjoy it or see anything.
So we continued on.We stopped at a crepe stand and Mike got a hot dog in a baguette and covered with toasted cheese.Obviously I had a taste or five of that haha.It was really good.I had a Nutella and coconut crepe which was delicious as well.We continued wandering around the island and checked out a few other churches. We went into one church that was pretty impressive and the organist was practicing for Sunday Mass which gave it a whole different feeling too.It really felt like a cathedral from the movies or something because of the music. We finished everything we had planned a little early so we moved on to some of the stuff we had planned for the next day.We went to the neighborhood of Marais, where there are all kinds of mansions. We stopped in the Place des Vosges, which is the oldest square in Paris. The author of Don Quixote used to live there and there is a museum for him, but it was closed for renovations. It would have been really interesting to see though I think. When he got older he went crazy and began to carve furniture with his teeth. That furniture is on display inside the museum.Next we decided we'd try to go to the Picasso Museum. On the way we stopped at a few more churches, what can I say, obviously we love checking out churches. When we got to the Picasso Museum it was closed for renovations as well!So I checked my Paris book for some other sights that I might not have written down but were close by.
We decided to go to the Museum of Modern Art there. What a huge waste of time that was. From the outside it looked really cool. But once we got inside it was weird!I guess I just don't understand modern art, I thought it was crap. There was a room with a video of some girl who was naked, holding a dead, skinned chicken. And all she did was stand there, look at the camera and then look at the chicken. It was odd. There was another room with a bookshelf with trash all over it and trash on the floor.I told Mike that all that inspired me to do was get a vacuum and clean it up.We wandered around for about 20 minutes more.It felt like 5 hours though. Then we finally left.We couldn't get out of that place fast enough.Thank god we got in for free with our museum pass.I would have been really mad if we had to pay for that crap.I guess I just like art that takes actual talent.Mike said that he thought that since France "dominated in art for so long they must have been sick of amazing art and decided to create shart. s***ty art." Haha I guess that must have been the reason because I have no idea why else anyone would possibly want to create something like that.Once we finished that adventure it was pretty dark out and we were once again tired, cold, and hungry. So we made our way to a metro to go back home.We stopped at Ed (the grocery store there, it's the same chain as our Dia here in Sevilla, just a different name) and got some food for dinner. We bought pasta, baguette, Camembert cheese, and a pizza. We popped the pizza in the toaster oven while we waited for the pasta to cook and had some baguette with cheese as well. After dinner we hung out for a while, and then headed off to bed because we were exhausted from so much walking.
