Hey Everyone!
I have saftly made it to Portstewart UK, which is Northern Ireland! I took planes, traines and cars to get here, and have really been enjoying it this week!
I arrived on Wednesday and have been going to orientation for a few days. We got tours of campus and met tons of international students. The international students have really stuck together this week and I have met many great people that I am really excited to be spending my semester with!
So far I have ventured into Coleraine, the main city, which is SO beautiful. I love that I choose a small town right on the ocean in northern ireland. I feel that this fits me perfectly. Its full of little shops and Coleraine was also full of private school children hanging out and taking over the streets!
The thing I have had to get used to the most is probably the public transporation, having to pay everywhere you go, and figuring out schedules and times, and also understanding the irish accent!
Many people here use phrases such as "whats the craic" meaning wheres the fun? but its prounonced crack..so you can imagine what I thought the first time it was used. Another thing they say is "oh thats class" meaning thats awesome! I really love the irish culture, the irish accents, and the people here are incredibly nice.
I have gone to two great pubs since I have been here. I went to Springhill pub right by the water in portstewart (portstewart, portrush, and coleraine make a triangle and are three tiny towns that make up the area.) They played traditional irish folk music, and I tried my first Guiness. Its something that will have to grow on me, for sure. the other pub I tried was the famous Anchor bar. I loved this bar because it was very traditional Irish. I tried an Irish cider this night, and its by far the best drink I have ever had.
I also got to go to Giants Causeway over teh weekend. This is a volcanic matter that has grown in geometric shapes, but the irish say its because of an irish folktale about a giant. Its by far the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen. A large group of international students took the train out and spent all day climbing the rocks by the water and looking at Giants Causeway. While we waited for our bus we ate at a tiny pub near by named 'the best little pub in ireland" It was a perfect irish day.
Today I went to Dunluce Castle. We learned all about the history of the castle, and its so intresting how deep the history is here. We got there by traveling to Portrush and walking 3 miles along the ocean. It was the most beautiful walk I have ever had. Every foot was just covered with green, everything. the castle was also gorgeous. I couldnt believe how beautiful it was.
I have two adorable irish roommates and a roommate thats an exchange student like me. I can currently hear irish accents out my window, and tomorrow im looking foward to my first day of class!
