Jamie's Central and South American Adventures
I'm tired. I started my morning by waking up an hour late. Then I couldn't find the free coffee they're supposed to have here. Once I gave up on coffee, I went to the ATM across the street cuz I'm totally out of cash, right? doesn't work. I walked thru half of San Jose this morning looking for an ATM that works! ¡¡¡¡¡pero no funciona!!!! finally, 15 minutes before my bus to the volcano is supposed to leave I get very angry. Keep in mind I still need a taxi to get me all the way thru the sketchy end of town to the bus station 10 minutes away, and I still have no cash or any idea where I am at this point. As I was trying to figure out where I was, I was trying really hard to to cry or start kicking things. They would have locked up the gringa loca for sure! A tico, obviously skilled at giving gringas directions, helped me out. I was really only a street over from the hotel I stayed at with the La Suerte people and 3 blocks from the safe downtown shopping district with an ATM que funciona. So in return for showing me to the ATM, this guy first wanted me to go home with him. When I said no, he said, ¨well, how about a cup of coffee¨in spanglish, of course. Again, when I said no, he asked for a dollar. hehe! I also said no, and called myself a taxi. We shook hands, I said ¨muchas gracias¨ and sped away in the taxi. I think he yelled something like ¨ïf you change your miind...¨ as I was getting into the taxi. crazy ticos! The rest of the ticos I talked to were very helpful in getting me to my bus on time and were satisfied with a simple muchas gracias. So I made it to my bus and got to see the volcano 2 hours later. I got into Volcan Poas NP for $1 today instead of 7 since I'm a student! So tonight I think I may treat myself to a protein filled dinner at the hostel bar instead of peanut butter and granola bars. The volcano was awesome! There was one trail going to the lagoon in an old crater, but I got to see some cool birds and plants. I also got rained on tremendously! Today was actually the first day I used my rain coat and fleece since getting here! it got cold on the mountain! My trip back to the hostel was rainy and uneventful. I got to practice speaking español with the taxi driver on the way from the bus to the hostel. He was pretty cool. He showed me where the bad part of town was. Actually we drove thru it and I was VERY grateful to be in a cab!!!!! We had a few laughs and then he drove me to the wrong Pangea. It's Hostel, not Hotel. Luckily, my hostel was just up the street... in the good end of town.
Oh, I've also decided... San Jose sucks! It's frustrating and big and no one knows where anything is! I asked maybe 10 people where an open ATM was, and they all told me different things. I either never found the ATMs or they were closed. Also, the streets are confusing and not always marked and no one gives you directions with street numbers anyway! But the city is very pretty at night... when you're inside locked doors in the safe part of town... I think I'll take a picture... Good Night!
