Jamie's Central and South American Adventures
This evening I watched Arenal Volcano erupt. It wasn't as awe-inspiring as this picture, but cool all the same. A little red glow at the top of a mountian a few miles away was all I needed. Actually, today was the first day in awhile, apparently, that it cleared up enough to even see the top of the cone! I consider myself lucky. It reminded me of watching the lava on the hill in Hawai'i. Although distant and small, you know it's power. Last night I did the volcano/hot springs tour. It was fun to hike thru the forest below the volcano and hear the rocks falling from the sky in the distance. We didn't see any of the eruption last night because it was too cloudy, but tonight well made up for it. Oh, and I saw spider monkeys!!!! =) Of course, leave it to me to stand there yakking away about spider and howler monkeys while there's a volcano erupting in the background.
Earlier today I toured Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. So cool! Note to all my wildlife ecology buddies, I want do a big trip there during bird migration. It would be amazing! I saw some Jabiru and a boat-billed heron, in addition to tons of kingfishers and herons! I also saw an ¨albino¨ howler monkey! As soon as I'm at a computer that can handle such things, I will try to send or post pictures. I haven't had a lot of luck so far.
My laundry's finally done so I have to go. Later all!
